Yet they rip off the graphics and the arty style of a '00s game (Zelda Minish Cap) althought the creators object that they are just inspirited by it: /posts/877701 Is now "inspirited" a fancy way to say "stealing"? Ok, you love Minish Cap and you want to make something similar. That's nice. At least try to make the graphics look different! Put some effort! You got paid for this project, it's not a freeware game that you made at your free time.

I don't know if it has been already mentioned here but Plant Cat - First Blossom is a fresh, cute, charming platform/puzzle game with graphics and soundtrack a la Game Boy. Speaking for the soundtrack, the composer is flashygoodness, also famous for his work at Tower Heaven, another great indie game in Game Boy style. flashygoodness.com/games/plant-cat/

So, I know I made a thread about this a while back, but I don't feel like digging it up. If anybody wants me to make a new thread, I can go for it. That said... Do you like Sonic? Do you like Ristar? Do you like Mega Man X? Do you like Gunstar Heroes? Do you like Rocket Knight Adventures? You know what, do you like any 2D action platformers in general? Good enough. You want Freedom Planet. Like, I'd say, at times that it outclasses Sonic 3. That is not something I'd say lightly. I know, it looks a lot like a Sonic game. And to be fair, they do take a lot of inspiration from those games. On the other hand, though, they pull a lot of ideas from a lot of other classic action games on the Genesis and put it together into something that's pretty unique on its own. Think of it like this: What Shovel Knight was to the NES, this is to the Genesis. (Although I'd say it's more like a Saturn game, but still.) You have characters that play pretty differently from each other, to the point where they each get a unique level to play through, a lot of secrets and alternate paths, and my favorite part, some really good boss fights. It also has what I'd basically call the hypest final level AND boss I've played through in a very, very long time. It gets pretty rough, at some points, especially some of the later bosses. You do, however, get unlimited lives. Also, there's a demo here. You get a pretty good amount of gameplay, but the best boss fights are in the full version. It's currently $15 on Steam, but I'd say it's totally worth it if you like any of the aforementioned games. Also, fun.

I actually bought Freedom Planet yesterday. I was loading up Steam to play some Quake and I noticed it on the "featured games" list. The title sounded familiar, so I looked into it more and recognized it as the game you mentioned however long ago it was. The trailer on the store page was enough to fully sell me on the game.
It's freaking amazing, by the way. Most of this post is basically just going to be echoing Bobinator, but Freedom Planet really does channel the DNA of all the best Genesis platformers. Sonic and Rocket Knight are the two strongest and most obvious influences, but there's a noticeable amount of Gunstar Heroes in there as well in the form of some clever and fun boss fights (there's even a shmup stage and a boss that is very similar to Seven Force).
The game feels good to play, and visually it's gorgeous. Despite taking gameplay cues from the Genesis' glory days, the graphics are a lot more like what you would see on the Saturn. It's got a ton of content, and you can expect to spend about 2-3 hours clearing the game your first time through (plus there are at least two other characters to play as, and I suspect there's a fourth unlockable character as well). The game offers a solid challenge as well... whereas I cleared Shovel Knight with a mere two deaths on my first run through, Freedom Planet ate nearly two dozen lives before the credits rolled, and some of the endgame bosses in particular offered delightfully intense battles.
This is an incredibly good game. I like it more than Shovel Knight. It's worth playing.

That's also his user name. Somehow I don't think he's here for deep discussions...

Just an heads up to tell that Nifflas's Saira has become free! You can get it as a stand-alone installer (it tells the code to use to unlock the full game, although the author plans to rerelease it with no protection scheme at all) or from Steam.

I so wanted to like Gingiva so much but it's so boring to play. It's really cool to look at though.

I really enjoyed Gingiva. I played the game only after the recent update so I can't say what it was like initially. It's undoubtedly the longest and most ornate freeware title I've played, and tragically rather unknown. The game is just inordinately detailed and the scale supersedes any other original title in the independent league of RPGs(save for maybe Yume 2kki).
