I've been playing Goody Bad Heroes It's a free belt scrolling beat em up developed by 8 Bit Fanatics (Tempura of the Dead, 1001 Spikes). I haven't tried the other free games that they made but this title is very solid! Nice. Do you happen to know the controls? x - Uppercut d - Jump a - Attack directional arrows - move If there's more I haven't figured it out yet..

An indie developer called Decemberborn Interactive is doing an platformer called Cathedral.
Is it just me or isn't this just Shovel Knight with an bigger NES Castlevania feel?

I'm getting a more Mega Man vibe from this than Castlevania honestly!

A poor man's shovelknight with lesser music, lesser graphics, and less humor, at least from the looks of this videos. How come that with really good indie games, there always come clone games that show that the creators haven't understood what made the original game they are copying so good? Think of all the "Simulator" games that followed goat and surgeon simulator, think of all the crappy FTL wannabes... And now a crappy Shovel Knight. Yay?

It's honestly kind of amazing, as soon as i started seeing the video i was instantly reminded of Shovel Knight, seriously, in the very first seconds.
Some clones at least try to hide their inspiration and such, not Cathedral though, Cathedral outright looks like Shovel Knight at every point.

And less risk than copying a bigger company.

With simulator games, it's already clear by title.. And well, look at this one, for instance, and tell me you don't DIRECTLY think "FTL"? with cathedral, it does not seem too bad because well, shovelknight itself is heavily influenced by other games. But FTL is so unique and original that ripp offs are so transparent... ItÄs also sad when you think about how many original ideas could be done instead..

The indie scene has a big problem recognizing most of its developers are stagnating in genres as much as AAA productions.
That said, when I read these posts I thought Cathedral was much worse than it appears. It may have little originality (and one should also know when the project started), but it looks more than competently made and one of the rare games with care to appear close to a true NES game. You should spend some more time on Greenlight before judging this project badly.

Yeah I thought it looked rather fun as well. And obscuring your influences might actually be more dishonest than outright wearing them on your sleeve.

Speaking of Greenlight, i saw this game that i immediately favorited.
Xydonia is an upcoming shmup that goes for an old Gradius and R-Type style of gameplay instead of bullet hells and other modern shmups and it looks awesome as hell.
As for Cathedral, it looks good, granted, it doesn't look as good and as fun as Shovel Knight but i can see myself buying the game in the future, it's just that as soon as i saw how the game looked that Shovel Knight came into my mind.

Ooh, Xydonia, I backed them on Kickstarter. They look pretty incredible.

I have tried the Xydonia demo a couple weeks ago at a videogaming event in Milan. It was in the retrogaming corner, at the same tables with a PC Engine running Soldier Blade and an Amiga running Apidya, so at first I thought it was some Dreamcast game - it's that good. Afterwards I had a long talk with the programmer. He said it'll take at least another year of work to finish the game (the two levels featured in the demo may change a lot, too), as they also intend to implement branching paths like Darius, with several different endings depending on both the path's final level and the selected character. Another game in development I saw there is Milanoir, heavily inspired by Italian crime movies of the 1970s.

Yeah Xydonia kicks ass, I backed it too and I'm amazed at how closely it emulates 90s shmups from every system and era. I saw Milanoir and other indie games at the Lucca Comics event the other week but there were too many people so the only one I could play was Death Party, nice and all but ultimately just a Nanaca Crash / Toss the Turtle clone (for those who remember them). Other titles of note were Indomitus Games' 5 Minutes Rage, a 2.75-D (so they say) multiplayer arena title and a demo of the long-awaited Riot: Civil Unrest.

A fighting game based on some of the duo's movies. The reproduction of several scenes in pixel art looks great, but I hope they'll eventually show more of the levels and gameplay. For now, just on fan response (consider that Bud died a few months ago) they are most certainly going to reach the main goal.
Also a late find: / I really like the style (the artist is also the one of Golden Axe Myth a few years ago) and there's a demo, feels a lot like a game from the late years of the Amiga or Mega Drive. Unfortunately unless last minute surprises the Kickstarter isn't going to make it, I hope he'll find other ways to keep on developing it.

What the hell, these guys doing the Bud Spencer game are from my hometown. Seems they use professional names though (a completely Italian crew in a German city?), and I don't seem to recognise anybody.
