www.hardcoregaming101.net/riseofthedragon/riseofthedragon.htmI guess this Dynamix adventure couples nicely with Heart of China. Willy Beamish should be up next. Replaying this, I can't really find too much special about it, but I definitely have a weak spot for it. I remember renting it when I was in seventh grade and beat it fairly easily. I wrote a walkthrough for it on my Apple II (which obviously never got distributed anywhere) and even made by own text adventure in BASIC inspired by it. I think it was my introduction to cyberpunk (hadn't seen Blade Runner yet) and it definitely left an impression.

So the Sega CD has a competent port of this game? I might have to look into this...

I really liked the game on SegaCD.
A few years ago someone pointed out that the green hue it has is reminiscent of the green hue within the matrix. Makes it feel a little more cyberpunky than the computer version.
Kinda hard to top the mouse control of the computer versions, though.

Wow, I didn't even notice how green the SCD version looked. I was never sure why this game wasn't that popular though among the console crowd (when Snatcher has far more fans with far less actual gameplay).
I wish they never put the real life portraits in though; they look really ugly compared to the in-game art.

This was possibly the only game that I felt I might not be old enough to play. I remember turning down the volume during certain dialogue trees.

Neither did I, until I replayed it recently directly after playing the PC version. It certainly didn't stick out to me when I originally played it. It helps eliminate some of the dithering issues, even though it still looks weird in comparison. Snatcher has much better writing and characterization, and a way more interesting plot, but I think they make interesting comparisons for East vs. West game design, since they both draw from similar sources.

I do love it when games let you change little things based on your actions, Blade Runner the Game did it too although that game altered the storyline of the past depending on your own choices with zero time travel...how post modern. Second Sight does that too but with more explanation /end tangent.

It's funny, the screenshots on the back of the box are completely lacking in the green tint.
edit: Spoke too soon. Three of the four shots are lacking in it (and if I'm not mistaken are from the PC version of the game) but the shot of the Dragon (BAHUMAAAAAT) is green.

You could mention in both this and in the Heart of China article that both games are freeware ever since 2001 (or 2000, not sure).

I've only played the Sega CD version, which I really enjoyed.
Sadly, I've never played Snatcher; likely the only SCD owner on the planet guilty of that.
Also never noticed the green tint.

Really though, I don't recall hearing anything about that and a quick google isn't turning anything up. You'd think there would be some online mentioning of it.

So it's technically not freeware.

True, if you want to download from MikroBitti's servers. All freeware games in their site (Beneath a Steel Sky, Betrayal at Krondor, etc.) requires a subscription to download. That's why you should download from other sites. I do believe that RotD and HoC were released as freeware.
