www.hardcoregaming101.net/retrogamechallenge/retrogamechallenge.htmI wanted to do an article on these two years ago, when I got the first Game Center CX for Christmas, but it just kinda fell off the radar. I loved it, and bought the localized version to support it even though I'd already beaten it in Japanese, but apparently it didn't do well enough for a sequel. I started an article way back when (I think March of this year) to try to drum up support, but again, it fell by the wayside. I decided to resurrect it to balance out all of the adventure game articles I've been posting lately, plus I'm hearing ruminations of a possible third game. More Haggleman, please.

Mutekiken Kung Fu is my favorite game from GCX2! Still play it now and then when I got 15 minutes too burn.

Yeah, it's a shame you guys didn't get the second one localized. I loved most of the games on the first one even though I couldn't get used to the overall bite-sized structure and the silliness of the "plot".

Nice! I was considering doing an article on this myself but I just couldn't imagine doing the text-heavy games in the sequel justice with no knowledge of Japanese, or a translation.
I want to add that I love that you put in the fake publishers and publication dates given in the magazines next to the titles, like real HG101-covered games.

If it wasn't so short, it'd be the best shoot 'em ups on the DS next to Space Invaders Extreme 2 and the Ketsui port. But yeah, once again, shame XSEED didn't get the sales they needed for the second game to come here. I was pimping the game out everywhere.

It also borrows from Monaco GP. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z85jMRmLatII mean, unlike the FDS game this one only has you going upward. Interestingly, the Sega Ages remake of Monaco GP looks like it plays EXACTLY like Rally King.

The only game I really had fun with in this game is Mutekiken Kung Fu. It's definitely the most impressive game in the set, mostly because it is easily the most refined version of Kung Fu/Spartan X ever made.
The rest of the games are either pale imitations of better games (made how many years ago??), or just as good as similar games made years ago but way too short.
Anyway, I guess when you buy this kind of game you are really paying for the nostalgia trip, so the quality of the actual games doesn't matter so much.

Maybe a little, but the handling in Rally King is much closer to F1 Race. The upward scrolling isn't like Monaco GP either since Rally King scrolls diagonally at times and not straight up like Monaco GP. It doesn't play much like Rally King at all. Stars are collected for points and combos and the screen has to be flipped to make turns.

I had a bunch of them from awhile back, but they were just the challenges, not the whole eps. And yeah, I definitely have to add a blurb about the actual show. Too bad it was never picked up. It brings me to wonder - is there an English equivalent of Game Center CX? I guess we have the Angry Nintendo Nerd, The Nostalgia Critic and The Spoony Experiment, but most of those are more about mocking old games. Game Center CX has an aura of "man this game were difficult/stupidly designed" but shows a lot more respect to them too.

yea for the first season they translated only the challenge but they picked up the slack for the second season (altough they sometimes skip the interview if it's related to a obscure japan only serie like sakura taisen)

It's nice that F1 Race is mentioned now, but it deserves more than a passing mention due to parts of Rally King being a direct parody of it (the controls, the 3, 2, 1 countdown with the exact same font, the driver that looks like Mario when he has his helmet on, and the contest parody). I have played Monaco GP in arcades and I have the SG-1000 and Sega Classics Collection PS2 port and I didn't see that much of a similarity with Rally King, so I didn't mention it.

If nothing else, they could totally run the original show on G4 or something. Anyway, while an excellent article, it makes me very sad that the probability of RGC2 making it outside of Japan is about 1.234%. Which sucks, because I HATE having to refer to FAQs to get around Japanese text... which the fucking detective game has in spades. Eungh... I guess I'll import it if the year 2010 passes by without any official announcement, but I won't be happy about it.
