I like in FBA when I map controls it tells me which button does what instead of "Button 1, button 2, etc..." Is there a way to do this for individual games on MAMEUI? It's very annoying to try and map 4 controllers to MAMEUI's somewhat cluttered interface. I looked around and I think I can do something to that effect using the controls.dat file in conjunction with some utility like one of these. Anyone did something like this before? I want to figure it out since FBA only runs Capcom and Neo Geo stuff. Appreciate the help.

press tab during gameplay. you get "input (general)" and "input (this game)" for the first 2 options that show up.
still won't tell you what exactly the buttons do in the game(if i'm understanding you correctly about fba, i use winkawaks myself), but "input (this game)" will show you how many players, and buttons per player, you can map to the game, and it overrides "input (general)," when you use it as well.

It's impossible for MAME to tell you what each button does for each game.
But yeah, just press TAB and you'll be able to choose between a global control scheme or a game-specific one.
Not only that, but you can change and control basically every aspect of mame by just pressing 1 key/button.
I wish more emulators did that.
