This is one of those "way ahead of its time" games I'd love to see make a come back. How about you guys? I'm not the most knowledgeable person on this franchise but anyone else think it deserves an article?

I'm interested in what your reasons are to assess it as "way ahead of its time".

It evolved the concept fairly well, but it was following the model laid down in games like Poy Poy or even Nekketsu Kakutō Densetsu before it.

Is super smash bros in 3D.
I remember the game as the first real 3D fighter that worked. Other 3D fighters were 2D games or clumsy.

i wouldn't call it ahead of it's time but it's very different and considering we have like a gazillion of article about other capcom fighting game like darkstalker and rival school,it's pretty weird that this site still lacks something like power stone
basicaly you are free to move around the stage as you want like you are in action game like zelda instead of your usual 1 on 1 fighting game, all of the stage have stuff you can pick around and throw at the enemy, occasionaly weapon will randomly pop out around, you can find swords, guns, rocket launchers, there is even a gun that trap enemies into giant bubbles
alternatively when a match start both you and your opponent hold a power stone,if a character gets hold of 3 power stone he transform into an invincible version of itself with a whole slew of new powerfull attack
so basicaly most battles end like a bar brawl would (actualy there is even a bar stage) you pick chairs around, throw them at your enemy and then you try to transform as soon as possible to finish up the job
power stone 2 it's pretty much the same but this time the game can be played up to 4 player, there are some new character but the real big deal is the new stages, one of them takes place on board of a plane,as the character fights the plane starts to break until the character are forced to jump and then you have to continue the fight while on air

The games themselves aren't the original 3d fighters but it's a challenge to find a duo of 3d arena based fighters that are unconditionally better particularly with 4 players. The combo system in the game is also rather nice (A similar sort of system would be implement by Yukes in their Gamecube Naruto games which are better than they have any right to be).
I love the Powerstone titles and feel that even though PS2 had like 5 stages they all had more life then ANY Smash Bros level - it's a damn shame Capcom haven't produced a third game (they did the PSP compilation but I guess that didn't sell well).

Yeah, I think it's a better SSBM before SSBM. The PSP has got to be the WORST platform for a Power Stone collection. >< Just give me Power Stone 2 on Xbox Live Arcade or PSN.
I know it's not 100% original(there are VERY few games that can make this claim. Hell, I can't even really think of any off hand...Maybe Tetris?) but the total package when it comes to execution and quality separates it.

Power Stone didn't have the endurance that Smash Bros did; the combat felt button-mashey, and most of the game amounted to throwing things at your opponent until someone collected enough power stones, at which point other person ran away until the gauge ran out and the cycle started anew.
Power Stone 2 was mostly the same thing, though the dynamic levels and four-players gave it a slightly longer lifespan.
PS2 also changed Wang-Tang's default color to blue to make his Power Change a less-flagrant Super Saiyan ripoff. For those of us that in our adolescence enjoyed the similarity, this was blasphemous.
