Has anyone seen these before? I just noticed them today. On the first scan, it's obvious the story sequences are photo montages, but what is that fourth image? It certainly doesn't look like something from the NES version. However, the real gold is on the second scan. Check out those state of the art, high resolution beta cinema scenes!

Pretty sure I have the Nintendo Power these images came from. It wasn't the issue with the Batman game on the cover (I just checked, that's January-February 1990) it was probably a Pak Watch from an issue or two before. Those are weird, the images themselves look like they used panels from the Batman comic-book The Killing Joke for reference. In the comic panels these cinema scenes are based on, Batman is interrogating a Joker impostor at Arkham Asylum. And the text is odd, too. Who is Batman interrogating? And why did the guy answer Gotham City? Couldn't he be more specific? Aren't we supposed to assume they're IN Gotham? And why does Batman sound so perplexed Vicki would be in Gotham? Of course she's in Gotham! Yeah, very strange sequence. It was probably cut because it made no sense. Also notice all the cinema scenes in the final game are digitized stills from the movie, which this obviously isn't. WB probably had them changed / taken out to tie more directly into the movie.

It looks lifted from the comic indeed!
*edit*
Duh, I feel silly. Apparently the beta is available for download somewhere on the net with all the cutscenes intact.

I read an article about this game's production recently.. where was it?
They mentioned how the Japanese team wasn't getting the game they were supposed to be making at all, and had Batman fighting aliens and/or monsters and things like that.
But the part I remember the most is that they finally needed to push it out the door for the holiday season yet Basinger's agent contacted the producers telling them Vicky Vale's picture in one of the cutscenes needed lusher lips (Basinger had some collagen done recently). The producers told him they weren't going to change it because they didn't have time, and that she was either in like it was, or they would remove that image from the game. The game shipped with the image intact.

Yeah, I read something like that too. But I can't remember where.

Do either of you remember if it was a magazine or an online article that discussed it's development? I would be curious cause I have played the beta and found the alternative cut scenes very interesting.

It's funny how they took photos and spliced them over the actual screens in the opening (at least, the ones below the text "THE STORY" in that first pic Rey posted). Batman seems to respond to anything they say to him by repeating it in question form.
Also, the ending is totally stoned out of its gourd.

Are there any other major differences in the beta besides the cutscenes?
I must admit that I'd love to try the Batman-versus-Aliens version, if only for the lulz.

The only difference I noticed was that the game is a bit harder, there's a 1up item on the first level and you don't get powerup/score boxes from all the enemies.

You know, I always wondered if this game, even before the version with all the aliens, was actually always meant to be a Batman game. Sure, there's plenty of movie tie-in games from that time that always included weird things you'd never see in the movies, but the fact that Batman constantly fought robots in ninjas in places like clock towers makes me kind of wonder what happened.
Kind of like Journey to Silius in reverse: It was going to be a Terminator game, Sunsoft lost the rights, so they stripped out all the references.

I checked lost levels but there was no article or mention in the forums about any making of on this game. Does anyone know if it was just random talk on a forum about the development or was it a full blown article with an interview with someone who worked on the game? And does anyone know what this site looked like at all or other things they cover.
