Which PS2 Import games do you think are worth buying for a non-japanese reader?

It depends on which region do you want to import from.

Japan, if it wasn't clear enough It wasn't for me To be honest, if you are not able to read kanji, you don't have a chance to understand anything but button smasher action games, especially when we are talking about PS2, with tons of JRPGs. It's a shame that the publishers are not putting english subs on JNTSC releases.

All depends on the genre. There are a lot of Sega Ages stuff that never made it out here, but that depends how much of a Sega junkie you. There's also a bunch of shooters like Dodonpachi Daoujou, Espgaluda and Ibara, but they're all pretty similar, so if you don't like one, you won't like any of them.
I hope they bring the other Taito collection out in America - they just released it in Europe. I have the Japanese compilations and they are awesome. Elevator Action Returns? Metal Black? I mean, it's all stuff you can play in MAME, but it rocks anyway.
Beyond that, it's mostly just RPGs, and a majority of the best ones make it in English eventually. (Not counting stuff by Namco.)

Well, theres always shooters like Ibara and Mushihimesama. Those seem like relatively popular imports.
...Or you could always have fun blundering through a bunch of dating sims. Nothing like trying to virtually seduce a woman without knowing what the hell you're saying.

Just shooters? Aren't there any platform games or unique sports games like Tennis no Oji-Sama: Saikyou Team o Kessei Seyo! (which is really great game)?
As for the Sega Ages series, the only interesting thing there is Gunstar Heroes Tresure Box

Going along the lines of what Kurt said, there are a wide variety of shooters available like Ibara, Raiden III, Castle Shikigami, etc.
There are also quite a few fighting games, most notably Neo Geo Battle Colliseum.
I'm sure there are also quite a few puzzle games.
Sadly though, that seems to be the limit, if you can't read Japanese.
However, even a game like Namco X Capcom, which is mostly fan service, are still enjoyable even if you don't understand what's going on.
Though in some cases, there are english translations available on the web, but that depends on how willing you are to read from the script every time something new happens.

What about that game where you play as carpenters and battle each other with different types of bulldozers/cranes/etc.?

What about that game where you play as carpenters and battle each other with different types of bulldozers/cranes/etc.? ???? Also, some of the Simple 2500 games might be okay. Apparently Earth Defense Force 2 (it's name is something else in Japanese, I can't remember) is really good. There's also the Oneechanbara - I've been meaning to an article on these, they're brainless but fun slash-em-ups starring chicks in bikinis. There's also Zombie vs Ambulence which shouldn't require any explanation. Most of them are quick, dumb fun but worth the price (a bit over $20.) Some of them are being localized for Europe but not America for some reason. Fighting games, are mentioned, are good too, but they usually end up coming out in America at some point, even if it's a year or two later.

...Zombie vs Ambulence? I have to see that. It sounds almost as nuts as that Japanese baby fighting game.
