Hey, thanks. I'm gonna grab a few screens from the video. Do you plan to leave it online (semi-)permanently? Then I could link it in a footnote. I will delete it soon, maybe i upload it to youtube.

Spark Man has screenshots now. I have the game, but it's broken. Makes DOSBox (and DOS in a Virtual PC) crash on the title screen. Is this due to your copy or just no emulation support of the game? I don't know. It's from an abandonware source, but no one else ever complained about it not running (can't suspend the thought that might be because no one else ever tried to actually play it, though).

Thanks derboo.
Great read, very comprehensive. Can't wait for more.
With your contribution to the site it is shaping up to be the definitive source for computer gaming info.

Yup, major props. I'm especially grateful for the information about early homecomputers. The SPC 1000 specs and the games look much like the PC 6001, is it possibly a clone? I was an SPC-1000 user. The answer is no. The Samsung SPC-1000 and the NEC PC-6001 resemble each other in that they both use Z80 CPU and MC6847 VDG. Use of 6847 in the PC-6001 may have affected the design choice for the SPC-1000. But its architecture shows a heavy influence of the Sharp MZ series. And it's not an MZ clone either. Sharing the CPU and the video made the port of PC-6001 software easier though. That's why you see lots of games that look like those of the PC-6001.

Also, does anyone know if these games are ripping of anything in particular: Toiyar Didn't quite get the game so far, but it is a labyrinth game and I think you have to find a key and then the door. You can also blow up the houses with bombs, but I don't know what use that is, yet. Aldebaran-1 Thought this was pretty innovative, but that might be because I don't know a possible original. You're that robo drone and have to rescue people from an expanding virus by shoving them to a room and locking all entries with blocks. Toiyaar: originally for PC-6001, Monthly PiO '86/04 p6-kei.hp.infoseek.co.jp/151_Pio/PiO.htmlAldebaran-1: originally for PC-6001, by Hudson Soft p6-kei.hp.infoseek.co.jp/095_Hudson1/Hudson1.htmlThe Korean title for the SPC-1000 was 방사능오염, bundled with the machine on purchase circa 1985. A.V.: couldn't find the original. don't think it's a sammi original though. maybe the title's changed. Note on other titles in the main article: Spy Panic: originally for PC-6001, PiO No. 1 p6-kei.hp.infoseek.co.jp/151_Pio/PiO.htmlOLION: for PC-6001, Ascii AX series no. 5 p6-kei.hp.infoseek.co.jp/021_ax1-5/ax1-5.htmlThe "Engrish" "L" seems to be intentional. And the SPC-1000 port looks like a conversion from 128x192 4 color to 256x192 2 color. Myeongtamjeong Vaveque: PC-6001 original title MUDAY, Monthly I/O '86/06 p6-kei.hp.infoseek.co.jp/047_Compac2/compac2.htmlXevious Tiny II: PC-6001 original title Tiny Xevious mk II, by Dempa p6-kei.hp.infoseek.co.jp/081_Dempa/dpDENPA.htmlAs you see, most of the early SPC-1000 titles were ported from the PC-6001, before the introduction of the VDP Unit. A few exceptions include Jet Set Willy and Knight Lore (probably from the ZX Spectrum).

Very good info, thanks for that. I'll search that site to see if I find anymore. Interestingly enough, OLION has full credits for all the tasks. Either they're fake credits, or the game has been wholly reprogrammed. AV's sprite looks suspicioulsy similar to LED Zone, but it's not a port of that. Gotta search on... EDIT: Article is updated with the new information. This also highly compromises Softmen's credibility regarding Return of Jelda should it turn out the credits for Olion are fake, so I marked that, too. The important news also led me to bundle them with an update I had sitting on my HD for a while. I was now able to make proper scans from the stuff I own, so I added more advertisements, coverscans and improved screenshots for some games. The parts that profit the most are the Mirinae profile, Magic Kid GooGoo and City Heroes.

Changing the screen resolution usually requires a serious reprogramming. Judging on the screen shots, Softmen had a very good command of the monochrome 256x192 mode. It appears that they intentionally took advantage of the MC6847 artifact to produce colors on this nominally monochrome screen mode (like Apple II). They might have been proud of their nontrivial efforts for porting. BTW, where did you get all these SPC-1000 screen shots? Some (e.g., Toiyaar) I can found in the emulator-related blogs, but some (e.g., Olion) are completely unseen.

I took the shots with an Emulator myself. One guy once released a huge load of tape images on his blog, even with some games typed in from old sourcecodes in old magazines (but included the url to his site in the title screen for those). I've posted all I've collected here: hg101.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=games&thread=5588&page=12#156107Btw., your link showed me what a great platform for Eroge graphics the PC-6001 was. No, I don't think any of those was ever ported to the SPC-1000

The article says that "Doraon Neoguri" was the last Korean "Ponpoko" clone. The last one I know of is "Raccoon World" by Eolith. In the lost games section, some games were said to be on "PCB"; does this mean arcade? The TV Broadcast game "Ttori-Wa Geobok" is a clone of "Penguin Kun Wars".
There are a ton of pre 1995 Korean arcade games that are missing from the article. "Animal House" - Yun Sung, "Bapoca" - Promat - 1995, "Black Touch" - 1993, "Black Touch 2", "Bouncing Balls" - Comad - 1991, "Bynng Jung No Ri" - Yun Sung, "Cannon Ball" - Yun Sung - 1995, "Casanova" - Promat - 1994, "Castle of Dracula" - Yun Sung - 1993, "Choi Jong Bun Seok" - 1994, "Choppy Action" - Promat - 1995, "Disco Boy" - 1993, "Domino Block" - 1996, "Double Point" - Min - 1995, "Dragon Bowl" - 1993, "Dragon Master" - Unico - 1994, "Dream Land" - Yun Sung" - 1993, "Egg Hunt" - 1995, "Escape" - Jung Won - 1993, "Evil Stone" - 1990, "Exe" - Promat - 1995, "Fantasia" - Comad - 1994, "Fighter Puzzle" - Yun Sung - 1990, "Fruit Cocktail" - Promat - 1993, "Ga Jang Mu Go Hoi" - Promat - 1995, "Ga Na Da", "Gawi Bawi Bo" - Game Plus - 1994, "Genix Family" - Nix - 1994, "Golden Fire 2" - Topis, "Gulf War 2" - Comad, "Gumbo" - Min, "Hell Out" - Comad - 1992, "Home Alone" - Promat - 1995, "Hot Blocks" - Nix, "Maya" - Promat, "Jumping Pop" - Nics, "Jump Kids" - Promat, "Jurassik" - Min - 1994, "Knighter Rent" - Promat - 1995, "La Girl", "Las Vegas Girl 94" - Comad". I do not know if Microhard is a Korean company. They made "Funny Strip".
Two Semicom games are also missing: "Mr. Kicker" - 2001, and "Arirang" - 2002.

The TV Broadcast game "Ttori-Wa Geobok" is a clone of "Penguin Kun Wars". Thanks, gonna keep that as notes for when I upload the next update In the lost games section, some games were said to be on "PCB"; does this mean arcade? It would mean arcade if the games actually exist, of which I have no solid proof yet. There are a ton of pre 1995 Korean arcade games that are missing from the article. "Animal House" - Yun Sung, "Bapoca" - Promat - 1995, "Black Touch" - 1993, "Black Touch 2", "Bouncing Balls" - Comad - 1991, "Bynng Jung No Ri" - Yun Sung, "Cannon Ball" - Yun Sung - 1995, "Casanova" - Promat - 1994, "Castle of Dracula" - Yun Sung - 1993, "Choi Jong Bun Seok" - 1994, "Choppy Action" - Promat - 1995, "Disco Boy" - 1993, "Domino Block" - 1996, "Double Point" - Min - 1995, "Dragon Bowl" - 1993, "Dragon Master" - Unico - 1994, "Dream Land" - Yun Sung" - 1993, "Egg Hunt" - 1995, "Escape" - Jung Won - 1993, "Evil Stone" - 1990, "Exe" - Promat - 1995, "Fantasia" - Comad - 1994, "Fighter Puzzle" - Yun Sung - 1990, "Fruit Cocktail" - Promat - 1993, "Ga Jang Mu Go Hoi" - Promat - 1995, "Ga Na Da", "Gawi Bawi Bo" - Game Plus - 1994, "Genix Family" - Nix - 1994, "Golden Fire 2" - Topis, "Gulf War 2" - Comad, "Gumbo" - Min, "Hell Out" - Comad - 1992, "Home Alone" - Promat - 1995, "Hot Blocks" - Nix, "Maya" - Promat, "Jumping Pop" - Nics, "Jump Kids" - Promat, "Jurassik" - Min - 1994, "Knighter Rent" - Promat - 1995, "La Girl", "Las Vegas Girl 94" - Comad". I do not know if Microhard is a Korean company. They made "Funny Strip". Although I admit that the article is weakest when it comes to arcade games (but only because I haven't reached the era of mobile phone games, yet), I don't have the aim to cover every single Korean game and company in existence. I have little interest to fully cover all those shady softporn bootleggers (not all of those listed above are Korean, btw). I want to spend a paragraph or two in the second part about the arcade scene, namedropping the more notorious ones, but that will probably be it. Unico/Uniana will get a company profile, though (I may update with a Yung Sung profile after the whole article is finished in 1-2 years, but it's very low priority for now). Two Semicom games are also missing: "Mr. Kicker" - 2001, and "Arirang" - 2002. Oh, I knew about Mr. Kicker, but I guess I somehow forgot about it. I won't talk explicitly about Arirang, though. It very much seems like it's just an export title for one of their gambling-type machines, of which there simply isn't anything interesting to tell.

Derboo I am wondering if you own a copy of SAF, or downloaded it from the net? Me and some others are desperate to find it but cant find it on any of the Naver sites or anything, so just curious if there's any dump floating around at all.
It sucks that the game (in what appears to be a budget cd re-release?) is so easily available from heaps of Korean online stores for only a couple of dollars, yet completely inaccessible to us.
Also in case you were interested, I managed to get Fox Ranger 3 and once I updated to the newest version dosbox it no longer crashed on the title screen.
Anyway, great work as always. Part 2 looking juicy.

A question about Legend of the Ancient Dragon Pursival-the english version has no music, only sound effects (as confirmed in the readme that you can find on the game cd). Does anyone know if that was true of the Korean version as well? The Credits text document does mention a "music composer"... I also find it pretty impressive that you can toggle random encounters on or off at any time by pressing F3... was that a feature of the original game?
Edit-In fact, does anyone know if the english version can even be finished at all? After playing it for an hour and half or so I've already hit a point where there doesn't seem to be any way to advance the story*, and it has to be the buggiest game I've ever played-for instance, there's this volcano dungeon you can go into from the very beginning. Enemies will hit you for about ten times your max HP, but if you turn the encounters off you can get to the end of the dungeon, which triggers a scene where you suddenly are accompanied by 5 other party members, most of whom you haven't met yet, despite the fact you were alone before reaching the room. Your party goes on to have the oddest conversation ever with some Red Dragon which doesn't appear on the screen at all.
There is no faq, video or even mention of anyone finishing the game on the Internet that I can find, although I did find an old forum post claiming the game may be unfinishable in this version. Anyone know better?
*Last thing I did was rescuing that kid in the castle cellar.
