Beatemup, beatemup, beatemup, y'all. (sorry, couldn't resist.) You know what they are: Double Dragon, Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Captain Commando, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Battle Circuit, and a hell of a lot of others. The concept is to take one, two, or more players onto the streets/facilities/corporate buildings/whatever and just beat the bloody crap out of oncoming hordes of schmucks, putzes, and ASSHOLES WHO ARE TRYING TO RIP OFF ANDRE THE GIANT WITH A FUCKING CHARGE MOVE THAT ANYBODY CAN BARELY FUCKING DODGE!!!!!
... whoopsie. I still kinda hate Andores. Tee hee. Anyway, discuss! I guess you could also count games like Dynamite Cop and Spikeout BEUs as well.

Final Fight 1 is my personal favorite (especially the GBA version - though I still hate Andore, and I mourn the loss of Poison...but the unlockables are worth it). I also love Bare Knuckle 3 (the Japanese version of SoR 3, which doesn't have everybody oddly recolored), and the freeware clone "Beats of Rage" (which contains a whole bunch of KoF characters, but sadly no Terry Bogard).

I'm just gonna paste here what was mostly ignored in the future article suggestions topic...
Guardians/Denjin Makai 2 (probably one of the deepest games of the genre, with 8 characters and an assload of moves for each of them, <shamelessplug> see the FAQ I wrote for it at the usual place </shamelessplug>)
Night Slashers (probably the bloodiest FF clone ever, plays nicely too, get the Japanese version if you want to try it in Mame, the Korean one is censored)
Ninja Baseball Batman (no relation to that Batman, it's a surpremely weird game based around a baseball theme (duh) with lots of over-the-top attacks)
Shadow Force (the main gimmicks here are the large amount of basic moves that are chainable freely, and the ability to take over practically any enemy and play as them)
Undercover Cops (made by Irem, thus using the MS-style graphics: besides them, the selling point is the ridiculously oversized blunt objects you can wield: the Japanese version is a better choice for this game too, as it's the only one with flashy fullscreen attacks)
Metamorphic Force (good Konami fighter with neat music and omgwtffurries)
Violent Storm (another Konami FF clone with large sprites and a heavy 80s feel)
Alien vs Predator arcade
D&D arcade games (IE. the far better known deep FF clones)

Hehe, the only beat-em-up I played a lot when I was younger was some Power Rangers game. Playing it now is really boring, though. I was one easily amused child.

OH! I almost forgot - Rastan Saga Part 3: Warrior Blade. Arcade-only, but it's fine-lookin', and it uses two screens to create a widescreen effect (just like the Darius games).

I've always been a Streets of Rage 2/ Final Fight fan myself. I've only begun to really play beat em ups. Anothergamer, Undercover Cops was pretty badass. I certainly enjoyed it.

Aren't these technically scrolling beat-em-ups?

Yes. The regular kind is generally referred to as "fighters". And go try my list already, that's what MAME is for.

Having played Final Fight on the PS2 Capcom Classic Collection, which I'm told is near arcade perfect (Poison and all!), I really don't see much need to play Final Fight One on my GBA, apart from Alpga Guy and Cody. And man, it's a crime what the recent Final Fight: Streetwise did to Guy. As if he'd ever become some lame tatooed crim...

Hmmm...I'd have to say the original Double Dragon, Golden Axe 1 & 2, TMNT: Turtles in Time, and Knights of the Round.
Those were my favorites back in the day.

Wow, I completely forgot about the old D&D arcade games. I remember I was able to play one in a local bowling alley. Most excellent game, but I'm not sure if you could even beat that dragon boss with only one person.
Oh, and about Poison in Final Fight. I was reading in the Capcom Classics bonus section that "she" is actually a cross dressing man. Is that true, or are they trying to justify Cody beating down a woman?

X-men from Konami (X-men, Welcome to Die!! I can't find the dual-screen version anymore) Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (You can throw your empty rifle at your enemies! Craziness) Samurai Spirits (Beat 'em up version, of course)
There was also a Spider-man game by Sega which featured Hawkeye, Namor and Blackcat, I forgot the name though...

I will step in and defend Final Fight Streetwise! Later though. Gotta go run to the post office. (It's not as bad as everyone says it is! Although I haven't gotten to Guy yet though so ?)
