With all his "kiddy" image, Mario is: 1. The most successful franchise in this generation (and all other generations as well). 2. Delivering us a lot of fucking great games, hailed by all kinds of gamers from all ages.
So why should Nintendo change his image?

Indeed. I find that assertion rediculous. You might as well be asking for Kirby hentai doujinshi.
And for the negative stigma towards gamers, my answer remains the same: Use the Akane Tendo method.

Uh...I didn't say change Mario's image. I really don't want to see Mario with a Glock and Peach with triple Ds.
The main thing is that for every Resident Evil, for every Eternal Darkness, you have a smattering of Pokemon and Mario Party. That turns the more shallow gamer off to the system.

"Weapon Rule There's always a hidden creature who is much harder to defeat than even the ultimate bad guy's final, world-annihilating form. It's lucky for all concerned that this hidden creature prefers to stay hidden rather than trying to take over the world himself, because he'd probably win. As a corollary, whatever reward you get for killing the hidden creature is basically worthless because by the time you're powerful enough to defeat him, you don't need it any more." -The Grand List of Console Role Playing Game clichés
I think this sums up anyone's feelings about modern RPGs.

You might as well be asking for Kirby hentai doujinshi. I'd totally buy that, haha. Seriously, though, maybe it's just me, but I think they HAVE changed Mario's image a bit. I don't think he's really as cute as he used to be, now that advancements in technology have allowed him to have a more realistic skin tone and fabric and such. Honestly, I think he looks pretty creepy now, especially in Melee. However, the possibility of this resulting in a more "adult" image for Mario has been negated by the fact that his voice is only getting more and more high-pitched and they've been putting him into even dopier situations than ever. I mean, Sunshine is pretty good, even if I do prefer Mario 64, but Bowser in a bath tub/pool as the final battle? What the hell? As for your friend at the tournament, Kurt, I think part of the disrespect stems from some guys not being able to handle the thought of a girl beating them at something, video games or otherwise. :P

I think this sums up anyone's feelings about modern RPGs. Well, mine are more clearly summed up like this: "RPGs" have become "Interactive Movies." I could write a feature on this subject, really. In fact I think I have, but I long-since deleted it. You might as well be asking for Kirby hentai doujinshi. I'd totally buy that, haha. I got all the Kirby Hentai I needed at the OFPCFG. So do I, but I think they've made it lighter, not darker. I mean, look at the Mario in Donkey Kong: He was dodging fire and barrels and hitting stuff with a hammer, while exploring an under-construction building. Then he used attack birds and alligators to try to kill Donkey Kong's kid. Then there's the first Super Mario Bros. I noted once that back then, everything seemed more... threatening. The monsters weren't just there for familiarity: They were out to kill Mario. There is no bigger statement of this than how every castle was filled with lava, and the battles with Bowser or his cronies-in-disguise always took place on a bridge over a pool of lava, and Bowser would throw hammers and shoot fireballs. This isn't even mentioning that Mario's own options in these battles were to either fireball Bowser to death or to send him down to the molten depths. Then with SMB2, we had Mario throwing veggies at people. Or, if you want to be completely canonical (and overlook the whole Lost Levels ordeal), with SMB3 Mario defeated Bowser by tricking him into breaking through a floor. Sure, with Mario 64 we again had Mario pushing enemies into lava and throwing Bowser into bombs, but somehow it seemed more... cartoony. Not only that, but as time went on it seemed more and more like Bowser was cutting Mario some slack, basically HANDING him victory. Indeed by Mario 64 I was convinced that the two were more like friendly rivals rather than bitter enemies. That's my take on it, anyway.

Ahh, two subjects raised here that I have to comment on: First of all, Kurt: totally agree about the dislike of being forced to 'earn' your bloody game! Far too many games have the "play through the game 6 times to unlock everything" attitude, I seem to remember the first time I really truly began to despise this was with Gran Tourismo- to get the game properly going you had to do stupid driving tests. I am sorry but that is far too much like real life for my liking- being given only a dismal amount of cars and tracks and being told "now complete the entire single player mode to be able to actually enjoy the full game" is most irritating... Secondly, Succubus: I sadly know of what you are on about. I dated a female gamer for about 3 years and boy, did she get a hell of a lot of abuse for being a female gamer. Other girls didn't want to speak to her when she mentioned it or plain stared at her funny. Staff in game stores either patronised her or sleazed on her and other 'hardcore gamers' tended to do the same. Funnily enough she could pick up a controller and kick their asses at games to shut them up but it was only then that they took her seriously. During school she had received constant bullying for being really into her games, its sad to think. She constantly got called a lesbian, loser, freak, weirdo, you name it and she was called it. She wasn't overweight or ugly but still, was given as much of a stigma that most people view those people with because she liked games and *gasp* could talk about them. Personally I found it awesome, we played through games together, helped each other through tough spots and amassed quite a collection together before the split. What wasn't to like? Anyways, in conclusion to what you said: People suck.

I agree that the driver's licenses suck, THOSE THINGS ARE IMPOSSIBLE. Only one thing attractive about it: if you did well you'd get a free sweet ride. Problem is, the non-completist that I am, I didn't do that and instead got shitty stuff like a Toyota Lupo, or something.

It is fun to be in a relationship with someone who also loves games (or where a common interest is shared, in general). Games are so important to me that I really couldn't imagine being in a relationship with a guy who didn't like them (or with a guy who's just a casual gamer and only plays brand new mainstream crap). Of course, it's much easier for a girl to find a guy into games than vice versa. :P Because of my tastes in games (platformers, RPGs, and other stuff that tends to be 1 player only), my boyfriend and I don't play games together as often as we should, but it's still fun to watch each other play or to be playing through the same game at the same time (actually, that kind of drives me nuts sometimes because I get so burnt out on seeing and hearing a particular game, haha). And, of course, there's always a wealth to talk about. And yes, combining collections rocks. :) I don't know what we'd have if our collections were still split (I'd surely have considerably more, I know that much), but combined, we're at over 700 games now. It's really getting rather sick at this point, hehe.

Ended up having to leave my Neo-geo and Vectrex as well as a few other games in a friends custody :( I personally miss having someone to watch playing through an rpg or someone playing through any game! There are some games she tackled I am glad i didn't have to play and vice versa- know what you mean about accidentally seeing a game being played through and it spoiling it too- she was put off RE4 due to my playthrough hehe... It is an important common ground to have though- like you said, its probably easier for a girl to find a male gamer. I'm getting to the point where I am going to have to look into dating again and bleh, its going to be such a chore trying to find a girl that accepts that I have videogame tattoos, legally changed my name to a videogames related name and have more games than clothes/sense. Oh well!
