NIS America seem to know there's a desperate JRPG following out there that'll buy dang near anything, and they eat up their crappy games. Aksys published this one in the US. NISA has done some Idea Factory games though before, right? Like Generations of Chaos? And they may have worked on Cross Edge and Trinity Universe - I can't quite remember.

Yep, mostly NISA. I forgot Aksys did Agarest.
NISA's done Trinity, Cross Edge, those PSP SRPGs(Generations of Chaos and Spectra Souls) and now they're doing Project Neptunia.
Also, Idea Factory was responsible for the port of Sakura Wars to the Wii. (I got the PS2 version for a reason.)

Idea Factory also did Spectral Force Genesis, that astoundingly bad Dragon Force rip-off for the DS. Annoyingly, it started off well, and fooled you into thinking: hey, this could be cool. But it quickly revealed itself to be, to put it succinctly, utterly incompetent. I mean, basic actions done via menu required like 5 dialogue screens just to confirm something. I'm going to do it / you're going to do it? / He is going to do it! / He's doing it now / It's being done
Who thought such a thing would be a good idea? Actually, that game too could be kusoge, but it seems like cheating choosing more than one IF game.

There's apparently a very public group willing to defend IF at Siliconera who lynched me for warning people away from Project Neptunia, so YMMV.

Has Idea Factory ever made a good game? Every time I hear about a game made by them the reaction is usually that it's garbage. Makes you wonder how they stay in business if they have this bad reputation even in Japan. My opinion (never played an IF game and never even heard of their games until today, mind you): isn't that, terrible quality of not (which is subjective), they HAVE a solid userbase in Japan but you hear - or even just WANT to hear - only from the haters? Maybe our "hardcore gamers" perspective is too distorted? Isn't that what is called "fan myopia"? We ask "how Idea Factory can stay in business" and the reply is "because they sell enough to stay in business". Just that. That would deserve a separate discussion.

But it's true, the game doesn't give you enough gold through battles to win the game - so you need a strange workaround (trade TP for a specific item which has the best TP to Gold value ratio) just to survive. The game seems bent on tricking you all the time. It has the kind of esoteric obfuscation you haven't really seen since the 8-bit days. EDIT: And we've got feedback on the article in the comments section: www.siliconera.com/2011/01/20/siliconera%E2%80%99s-hyperdimension-neptunia-fan-powered-qa-part-2/I think a lot of people complaining on Siliconera missed the point. The kusoge entry simply said it was a complicated Kafkaesque game; which if you're specifically into such bureaucracy, will appeal - otherwise if you don't like it, and many don't, stay away. These kusoge entries are very revealing in terms of how gamers cognitively function. I can practically see the brain gears turning in that Siliconera thread.

Well, if anyone wanted proof that Idea Factory has fans...well, that comment thread is pretty much evidence.
It is pretty odd, though. Nowhere in the review does it technically say it's a terrible game, just an immensely (and hilariously) overcomplicated one. It's not really a flame, either, but some folks can't really comprehend negativity without thinking that it's baseless. Oh well.
Someone on the Facebook said that Idea Factory games are complexity for complexity's sake. That sounds about right, and there's some appeal to that...but not for me, and not for a lot of people, certainly.
Also, the people that seem to think that we're tolling for hits for something like this don't understand how Internet traffic works. If we actually wanted hits we'd be blasting games people actually cared about it.

Funny how an NISA staff member of all people took offense, when I've been supporting their company since it was founded. I just expect better from them.

I've heard from people I respect the opinion of that DP is fantastic. yea but i tought the column was about games that screwed up something in a spectacular manner and you can't really convince me that video up there hasn't some hilariously bad writing here's another really weird scene www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa19-c1R_Qgoh and maybe another suggestion could be chaos wars? the dub of the game is pretty infamous www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAtC1SzWSXg
