There was this free indie PC game I read about one some blog a couple years ago, back when I had my old computer and was unable to play it for myself. The whole thing was just (as it was described) flying around and exploring these random alien landscapes. Probably a long shot, but does anyone remember something like this?

The talk of Growl as a top down game made me think of something;
It was a top down beat 'em up in the arcade. The plot had something to do with an undercover cop having his cover blown (though I'm sure it wasn't Irem's Undercover Cops) and a girl being abducted. You walk from the bottom of the screen to the top and you could punch of kick. The enemies had a mafia feel to them, at least in the first level. Every once and a while an enemy would have a gun and you would die if one shot hit you.
I played it once while waiting for a pizza to be ready 15 years ago so the details are kind of fuzzy

There's this one game I can only remember vaguely, and may have actually identified, but maybe somebody can tell me what just doesn't feel right. This is a huuuuuuuuuge long shot but I figure worth a try. An RPG for the Super Nntendo, I rented it from Blockbuster (in the UK). Not really got much idea about the date, but I'd have to guess it was later on in the lifetime of the snes (no idea how long the game would've been sat there though). In my memories it looks very Zelda-esque, and appears to be top down and action orientated. The reason it sticks out in my memory is because despite renting the game on 2 seperate occaisions my retarded child brain couldn't work out how to get past the introductory area (lack of manual and lack of internet used to ruin my life). The playable character was blonde, and the game had some sort of wizardry/magic theme. The introductory bit was in this sort of colourful meadow with lots of water and waterfalls, no enemies, and I distinctly remember you having to find this spherical orbs for reasons I never deciphered. I also can remember rainbows for some reason, perhaps from this level. I remember the graphics having a sort of water colour feel to them, with pretty big sprites On top of this, for some reason "Merlin" stuck out in my brain. I dunno if this was an extension of the whole wizardry theme or what. So I googled "merlin snes" and got results for "young merlin". It appears to be an action RPG akin to Zelda, with a blonde playable character, and the first area i've seen on playthroughs is a meadow with water and even a rainbow. But for some reason this doesn't gel with what I have in my head at all. The graphics look all wrong and the main character was seen in a more top-down perspective in my memories, with graphics having a much more Japanese feel to them. In my memories the graphics are very much like Illusion of Gaia, but I don't think I was playing that. Also, I remember there being NO enemies from this level, unlike in the first area I can see for Young Merlin. So basically, does anybody know of ANOTHER Snes top down game which starts in a meadow and possibly has a wizard theme? If you even have an idea please help me to end the many years of torment this memory has given me. It CAN'T be Young Merlin.....that game looks TERRIBLE! ...Reading through this has made me finally realise that chances are it was Young Merlin and time has played wth my memories....woe is me

Maybe you'd like Story of Thor more (which is a Mega Drive game, though).

Hi everybody, I've been a lurker for quite some time now but I'm stepping out of the shadows to ask about an obscure NES game. Hopefully this isn't the worst way to make an introduction for myself! ;D
Years ago, while perusing my collection of Famicom/NES roms, I stumbled across a Japanese title that was in key ways distinctly like a Wonderboy game. I remember that you play as a giant robot that wields a sword and shield, and the sprite artwork was identical to the Wonderboy style. It wasn't just a similarity either; this game is a definite clone in some areas. The thing that was weird however was that it had an overworld where the player can engage in random battles; when one started, it shifted to the classic sidescrolling wonderboy perspective where you could duke it out with giant monsters and etc.. Kinda like Zelda II... only Wonderboy-ish sprites and iconic animations.
For all I know, this game could have been a license for some giant robot show. At the very least, it has numerous trappings of that genre.
Unfortunately, I didn't remember anything concrete about the details. I've tried researching what Westone has done and whether or not they assisted in developing Famicom titles, but I've had no luck.
Any ideas?

Your answer just knocked my question right out of the ballpark. I consider myself knowledgeable, but that's impeccable. Thanks and stay hardcore, Mainpatr.

Looking for the names of two puzzle games:
What is the prototype game for the basic puzzling concept in Jewel Quest?
Also, there was that puzzle game where you have to hit stacked blocks with a hammer to arrange them in rows of three that then get deleted. There's a number of knock-offs of this, too, but I'm looking for the original.

for the second one: Daruma Dojo maybe? Might be completely off or maybe just a copycat, but it's the only one like that I can think of.
As for Bejeweled: I'm still not sure if it really predated the Flash version of Zookeeper. Is there any official word on that? Anything to prove it?

I remember last year, or maybe the year before about a square enix DS game, where it was kind of an action/strategy title where you proceed up a massive tower with a big 3D dragon
