Nah, the original theory of the game being Getsu Fuuma Den retooled for the U.S. doesn't quite work out, because the original TMNT was released in Japan as a TMNT game. Also, when I interviewed composer Hidenori Maezawa a few years ago, he specifically mentioned working on TMNT and how puzzled he was about the license. I think his exact words -- in a random English interjection for emphasis -- were, "Why turtle? Why ninja?" The relationship between the two games is probably more akin to Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3 (one game iterating on the other's tech) than Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2 (same game with tweaks). I made the comparison of Contra vs. Contra Force. Similar, but not quite the same.

Konami also tended to recycle a lot of play mechanics of their earlier games into newer games. The side-scrolling segments of Snake's Revenge had a bit of Rusn'n Attack and M.I.A. to them, and Arumana no Kiseki for the Disk System has the same grappling mechanic as the arcade game Roc'n Rope.

Oh, I didn't realize TMNT's Japanese release predated the license making its way to Japan, but that explains a lot. I've always wondered why it was called "Geki Kame Ninja-den" while the sequels were branded as TMNT games.

Just to show the weird treatment that Konami gave to the Ninja Turtles in their first NES game, in the Japanese localization they turned April into Splinter's daughter in the game. I already knew that April refers to Splinter as "otō-san" in the game, but I always thought it was out of respect due to Splinter being the turtles' sensei/father figure. It never actually occurred to me until I read a scan of the manual that April was literally supposed to be Splinter's daughter (I'm guessing she was born before Splinter's mutation, since they mention Hamato's wife, who was killed by Oroku). Here's a scan of the manual. vivi200x200.blog50.fc2.com/blog-entry-1314.html

Konami is about as dense as Sega these days. So much good history, but they do nothing with it. I would love to play a new Wai Wai World, but it'll never happen. I'd say that the only thing they may give a crap about nowadays besides Contra, Castlevania and MGS is Pro Evolution Soccer. But, considering Konami's inclusion of music and stadium elements based on some of their other classic games on the PS3 and 360 (and maybe PC) versions of PES2011 as unlockables does show they do remember some of them (and I think that would be the first official appearance of Wai Wai World outside of Japan)

Konami Man showed up in PoR -- surely that counts?

I haven't played Portrait of Ruin (if that's the PoR you mean), and I didn't know there was a Konami Man cameo on that one, but, considering it was released outside of Japan then it counts

Say, does this mean that the TMNT Game Boy games were based off some other Japanese Konami GB games as well? (I still think TMNT2 GB is one of the more graphically impressive games on the system. It would make a lot of sense if its engine was not developed from scratch.)

Doubt it! They only made four games before Fall of the Foot Clan (Motocross Maniacs, Castlevania: The Adventure, Nemesis, and Quarth).

Weird how these get Put into the Yugioh Univerese but Not a Single thing from Contra or Castlevania has. Plenty of Gradius, though. Also, the Castlevania: Harmony of Despair stage based on this game is pretty fun.

Goemon's in the cards. Hm, wonder if it's possible to have a completely Konami powered deck or atleast one that's clearly influenced by it.
Edit: Seems Konami beat me to it. In The latest Yugioh game for the PS2 Yugioh Gx Tag Force Evolution or The Beginning of Destinys its known in America, if you input the Konami code into the card shop menu it unlocks the Midday Constellation (Noon Star) pack which is cards all based off Konami game series that all exist in the real card game. Here's the list of them.
Sasuke Samurai Victory Viper XX03 B.E.S. Crystal Core (gradius boss) B.E.S. Tetran(gradius boss) Sasuke Samurai #2 Sasuke Samurai #4 A-Team: Trap Disposal Unit (The paper plane guys from Parodius) B.E.S. Covered Core(gradius boss) Fossil Excavation (The paper plane guys from Parodius) Lady Ninja Yae Power Capsule Sasuke Samurai #3 Aitsu Big Core(gradius boss) Boss Rush(gradius boss spell card) Cyclon Laser (Spell for gradius card) Doitsu Getsu Fuhma Gradius Gradius' Option Koitsu Moai Interceptor Cannon Nanobreaker Option Hunter Soitsu Space Mambo Tactical Espionage Expert(Metal gear Solid based monster card)

Hm, looks like that pack is missing a couple. I know there are also Yugioh cards based off of Thunder Cross and Xexex as well. Unless those cards just didn't happen to be around yet when that particular game came out.
