Well, E74 (mistyped it as E34 before, my mistake) is an error code (incidentally the one that says "general hardware failure"), whereas quote "there is no error code displayed on the connected display". This is simply false. Microsoft's site on this. support.microsoft.com/kb/969905/en-gbE74 = Three flashing red lights. You're reading this wrong - RRoD (the 3 lights) can be caused by an E74 error, but there's only one lit quadrant for an actual E74 error. My last 360 didn't RRoD, but actually had an E74 error, which is most commonly caused by the GPU overheating. RRoD is for a general error that usually means your console is worse off (for starters, your 360 doesn't know what is wrong, exactly), E74 is a more specific error, and when you get it, the console will display the message (there are other error messages you can get with a single quadrant lit, too). E74 can be fixed by taking the 360 apart and re-applying some thermal paste to the GPU. However, buying the thermal past and the tools to take the thing apart can end up costing you ~$20, unless you happen to have them just lying around. If you don't have those items and have never taken a console apart before, this is a pain in the fucking ass that is going to cost a fair bit of time and money, not to mention frustration. I took mine apart to replace the DVD drive once, a second time to replace it once more and when I started getting the E74 error, I took it apart, learned what I could do with it... and figured it wasn't worth the money to fix it, even though I already had it apart. I mean, the thing was basically a ticking time bomb at that point, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't going to get much more out of it before it irreversibly fucked itself. That, and slims were out, which are more reliable. I sold what was left of my console, as well as its original box and a pelican cooler I had, on eBay for around $60 (I got a pretty decent amount for it). I sold my 60gig HD separately, which netted me another $40, and sold my wireless router for $20. This was a pretty big boost in paying for the new slim (which has built-in wireless), and a real ease off my back that my 360 probably won't screw up for at least another 3 years.

How reliable are the slims in comparison to the best running chubby 360s? My neighbors bought a slim and it seems overly sensitive with scratched disks that would normally play on their chubby 360. It also seems to be way slower. Might just be them though.

My E74 definitely came with 3 red lights. Microsoft themselves call the E74 a "general hardware error", not a specific one, to be accompanied by 3 blinking lights. Of course, "general hardware error" can also mean that somethings wrong with the graphics chip, but that would be a special case of several possible ways to get the E74 AND three blinking lights. The statement "3 blinking lights = no error message" is definitely wrong. (For reference, the Wikipedia page says so in the image where it displays the various light combinations.) What idiot came up with the RROD name, then? It came from Window's Blue Screen of Death. Not complaining about the nature of the name in itself, I just find it odd if not misleading when there is an error condition that actually shows a ring of red lights and an error condition that doesn't, and people call the latter one red ring of dead. But people do call rugby football and football soccer, so what do I know.

Well, rugby IS a form of football. And "soccer" was a name created by the British (the inventors of the sport) as a way to differentiate between association football and rugby football. As association became the more dominant of the two, people just stuck with calling it "football" and dropping the association/soccer bit of it. But soccer is still used in countries where other forms of football (gridiron, rugby, Australian rules, etc.) are more popular than association.

All that doesn't change the fact that you predominantly play the ball with your hands in rugby. Not complaining about the nature of the name in itself, I just find it odd if not misleading when there is an error condition that actually shows a ring of red lights and an error condition that doesn't, and people call the latter one red ring of dead. But people do call rugby football and football soccer, so what do I know. It's called that because "red ring" is easier to say than "red bottom-left-three-quadrants-of-a-circle" But not easier than, say, red lights of death, red trinity of death, red stuff of death, red bars of death, all of which makes more sense (or at least less nonsense) than red ring of death.

And your life is negatively impacted by this semantic issue in what manner? Seems like a very small thing to get upset over.

By making me look stupid for not knowing what RROD is Actually, I'm not upset. Just annoyed. And obsessed with discussing stuff that annoys me.

What are your thoughts on Lady GaGa?

I don't consume mainstream TV and radio, so other than being vaguely aware about the name and her profession (music, right?) I'm quite ignorant about her.

I inherited a RRODed console for free, ditched the x-clamps and heatgunned it and sold it along with a 20 gig HD on craigslist for $120, bought a new $199 slimline with my girlfriend's Target Card and got an extra 20% off, so I basically got a new 360 for $40. I got a 16 gig flash drive for $15 from Wal-Mart and not even half of that is full even though I have a ton of arcade games.
Anywho, that would be my recommended CoA.
