Hey,
I know at least one of you (kitten) had their 360 Red Ring in the recent past, so I figured I'd hit you up for what you did.
My brother's Falcon model died, and it's out of warranty. If you upgraded, what did you do with your bricked consoles (any recommended places to sell/dump them aside from Ebay)?
Thanks!

Is it a full RROD or yet an E74 (three quarters of the ring lighting up red)?

Is it a full RROD or yet an E34 (three quarters of the ring lighting up red)? I'll have to double-check, but he said it was a full-on RROD. He went through the unplug/reset process that was on MS's website and stuff, and to no avail.

Anyway, the E74 is supposed to be fixable by overheating (check youtube, preferably use blocking the ventilation, not the towel thing). There's also a few solutions for the RROD which require opening the console, but I guess it's worth a try before just throwing it away.
Youtube is best for this, as they actually show you how they do it.

What idiot came up with the RROD name, then?
Btw., that wikipedia site is faulty at least in detail. It claims there's no error message with the General Hardware Failure.

There isn't. E74s can cause the red rings, but there's no error code specifically associated with them - hence general hardware failure.

Well, E74 (mistyped it as E34 before, my mistake) is an error code (incidentally the one that says "general hardware failure"), whereas quote "there is no error code displayed on the connected display". This is simply false. Microsoft's site on this. support.microsoft.com/kb/969905/en-gbE74 = Three flashing red lights.

I'm not sure where it says that, but "there is no error code on the connected display" seems more like a symptom than a description. When my elite RROD'd a while back it didn't even come on. Like I said, while the E74 is an error code it's just one possible cause of the red rings; not all the problems that can cause them display an error code.
(For reference, my 360's video card kaput.)

If you can't fix it look on craigslist. There are usually guys who do repairs or buy broken consoles for parts.

What idiot came up with the RROD name, then? It came from Window's Blue Screen of Death.

I had my Xbox RROD back in 09' and hey- I got it fixed by some local PC shop and it's worked since- though I only play games direct off the HD now to try and keep it fighting. Do Survive!

My 360 RROD'ed 6 months out of warrantee. Rang up MS support and they replaced it, no questions asked about it being out of warrantee. My advice is to give them a ring and see if they can sort it out for free first. Also in Ireland a few people have taken the shops where they bought PS3 consoles that YLOD to a small claims court and all of them have one based on the console not being 'of merchantalble quality'. Might be worth considering.

I think the UK has more stringent laws about that sort of thing than America. Kind of sucks for us.
