Hey, you know Boxer Hockey?

If not, you probably remember this, at least:

Skullgirls is a fast-paced 2D fighting game that puts players in control of fierce female warriors in an extraordinary Dark Deco world. From Autumn Games and Reverge Labs, Skullgirls uses advanced graphical technology to feature the unique art of Alex Ahad (Scott Pilgrim, Lava Punch) in collaboration with renowned tournament champion Mike "Mike Z" Zaimont. Calling to mind old-school arcade fighters – with a high-definition twist – it’s a one-of-a-kind, action-packed competition complete with awesome combos and an intriguing backstory.

Set in the fictional Canopy Kingdom, Skullgirls pits players against ranks of deadly but beautiful opponents in an attempt to control the enigmatic Skull Heart, a mysterious artifact with the power to bestow wishes – but not without a substantial price. Should the soul be less than pure, both the victor's wish and her being shall be corrupted into a living nightmare that haunts humanity. She will be known as the Skullgirl, a monstrous entity of immense power.

So, yeah, that dude is making a 2D fighting game. It looks like it's pretty unfinished so far, and it seems kind of slow, but hopefully by the time it's finished, whenever that is, it'll look a better. That's some damn good art on it, at the very least. Nice character designs, too, although one of the characters seems to be edging WAY too close to Millia Rage.

By the way, that Alax Ahad guy they mention? He did like one guest comic for Scott Pilgrim, so don't get too excited about the artwork. Still pretty, though.

Well, he's working on it, but I'm not sure to what extent. Probably a lot of animation for several of the characters. It's what's been keeping him from updating Boxer Hockey regularly, as of late.

That's just the first part out of five, I just put that one strip up because that's what pretty much everyone thinks of when they think of Boxer Hockey.

Yeah, saw some of this. It looks pretty damn weird. Giantbomb has a quicklook up, and the game looks pretty rough (still an early version), but it has some cool things to note, like their anti-infinite system, which is pretty interesting (after a while of getting wailed on by an infinite chain, a player can press any button and their opponent will fly back and take damage). I like to art, though the actual gameplay doesn't seem very much to my style.

I think it's really weird that a lot of articles commenting on Alex Ahad's involvement list his works as (Scott Pilgrim) even though his involvement in that was literally a one page guest illustration at the back of one of the book's. A good one but still, kind of...misleading?

I believe I played a very early version of this over a year or so ago. At the time you could tell they were still working out animations, moves, the fighting system itself, etc. as it only had two characters playable. Looking at the video it's definitely changed a lot from what I played, but I can still see some of the core concepts and characters.

Anyway, the art style is interesting but the game play itself doesn't appeal to me. I guess I'm growing tired of the offense oriented air-dash fighting games; never was a huge fan of those to begin with. I find it amusing that everyone seems to fight with their hair, though (that's what it looks like to me, anyway); it's like a fighting game with nothing but Millia Rage variants.
