I was digging through some old e-mails and I thought somebody here might find this interesting. A friend of mine had gone to College for computer animation and got an interview with Rockstar Toronto (which isn't located in Toronto...) He quite disliked the GTA games so it probably wouldn't have been a good fit but the interview didn't even surpass his low expectations.
Is this a typical work environment? I know it's not the main branch but considering this was six years ago and Rockstar had more than a few hits you'd think things would be a little better.
Rockstar Toronto was pretty ghetto.
First off, they had no sign outside their building at all... I walked passed the place and reached the end of the street. So then I had to go by the address... and back track. So I walked in the building that had the correct address and then there was a small sign that said Rockstar Games, pointing up the stairs.
So I go up the stairs and press the intercom... there was a note that said to use it. It was pretty much a door bell.
Then this young guy, Im guessing a programmer. Answered the door wearing no shoes. And he was all weirded out I was there... and they seemed unorganized/prepared. And he's like who are you here to see? They didnt tell me who I was coming to see... so he eventually went downstairs... came back, and then brought me downstairs. He made some excuse how cuz it was lunch time... blah blah... it was 12:50, but I was supposed to be there at 1:00.
I then met two guys... who were pretty much kids. This area was a hole as well... they werent too socialable... they brought me to this back office. There was a weight bench in the one corner of the office... I guess that might be their "gym". So yeah, we continued to have a crappy interview... and the one guy was bouncing this yellow ball during the interview... or juggling it back and forth with his hands. Saying... we work 70 hours a week here... etc etc... he also insulted his employees saying that the people who work here are "dense"... they also weren't too happy with my 2D portfolio as my style totally doesnt suit them... which I already knew. Oh yeah, and the two other people who I talked to who were interviewed there today as well had that guy bouncing the yellow ball during the interview, which annoyed them... the whole place was very unprofessional. There was also garbage everywhere... and it was very dark... Basically, imagine a bunch of programmers working in a hole... or a dirty dirty basement... who work there 70 hours a week and probably dont pay for a cleaning staff... and you have Rockstar Toronto.
The place also is in the middle of nowhere in Oakville where you would have to take a bus for sure. Ive also heard how they like to fire people... and work people like slaves... and since I heard the place was a ghetto and that turned out to be true... I think they really want texture artists... and they pretty much want people who just want to model TONS of props, and texture...
Anyways...
Im turning them down if they call me, but I doubt that they will.
