all developers drew from it was that players like fighting large bosses. This should be bronzed and put on the desk of any aspiring game developer, TODAY. YES. I'd also say Bionic Commando (the 3D one). Mostly 'cuz I'd love a sequel with fixed problems, but also because it is totally unique in its swinging gunplay.

Hell, give Spencer a real haircut and change Super Joe's voice to someone OTHER than Spike Spiegel, and 99% of my problems with that game would be solved.

Blaster Master. I love metroid like games (well, the older ones that is) and the whole dynamic using a vehicle to get around and disembarking to solve puzzles, explore small places, etc. I really loved and I wish Sunsoft got a chance to push that concept further before they were reduced to a panchinko machine manufacturer (if they are even that anymore.). Heck, even the 3d game did it pretty well I felt despite how rough around the edges it was its one of my more fondly remembered PSone games.
Air Force Delta Strike was a criminally under rated game mostly because everyone thought you were forced into a bunch of tedious dogfights between the campaign missions when they in fact could be skipped by sleeping in your quarters (which in all fairness was never explained). A shame really. The reason why it was so good though is it added what the genre needed so badly: variety. Most flight combat sims I've played typically have three missions types: destroy fighters/ground targets, escort something to a destination, fly through narrow space. If even that. Even the aircraft usually weren't too different at all, usually being a little bit faster or slower and with different armaments. AFDS made it so nearly every mission would have a nice spin on it combing those archetypes with a random element that forced you to approach things in a pretty atypical manner. The planes also had a lot more differences than most games even if a lot of them were copy pastes with a different model (when you had like, 130 aircraft that's bound to happen) Later in the Year Ace Combat 5 released and did much the same and slightly better too and then after that every other game of its ilk just returned to the same bare bones formula. Its sad when the last game I've played in the genre : Project Silpheed, felt unique just because it had some different physics for being in space.
I'd also say Starfox. While the series is plenty successful it just seems the genre itself never caught on too much. The only other really good rail shooter I can think of is Panzer Dragoon. I wonder what happened, its not like people didn't like the genre at all, both the first and 64 were loved so why didn't people think to try it themselves? Further baffling is the choice to take Starfox itself away from its own genre. Here's hoping the 3ds remake en kindles the genre somehow.

Chrono Trigger did so much cool stuff that has pretty much never happened again: badass team attacks for all character combinations, multiple endings depending on when you fight the boss, and the option to let the main character stay dead (Magus makes a good lead with Lucca and Marle .) Some of this stuff may have occurred in Chrono Cross but I can't remember. Why didn't anyone else adopt this or ever make another fuckin' sequel?! Also one of my favorite platformers ever, Dynamite Headdy, had that cool changing head technique and almost every stage used those powers in a new way. I miss creativity in my platformers. Bushido Blade had some good ideas going on, but I think it was limited by the 32 bit hardware. I'm sure the game could be expanded into so much more in this era. LSD, the insane dream simulator, is so offbeat and fun. I wish someone would make a new dream and nightmare simulator.

I'd much rather see them make a more "classic" experience than yet another Symphony clone. THIS. Another reason Konami sucks today. I'm sick of Metroidvanias. What was the last TRUE Castlevania game (besides The Dracula X Chronicles and Adventure ReBirth)? Rondo of Blood? Bloodlines? Dracula X? Can't they just do something like with Contra 4? An awesome sequel that goes back to the basics?

Old topic but: hg101.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=games&action=display&thread=4466Quite a lot of new titles have come out since that time as well like a new Sin & Punishment (and unreleased leaks like Geist Force for Dreamcast).

Oh, so they have. My bad. Forgot about S&P and Rez. But in all fairness I never heard of any of those aside from like, 3. I'd like to see the genre more in the forefront... and not be mediocre cash ins like nearly all those cash grabs on the wii.

Rocket Knight Adventures is the one I can think of first hand. I guess, to be honest, it was just one of the mascot platformers that ended up coming out once Sonic started getting popular, but still, it was just SO good. It should have at least ended up at a Contra level of popularity. Yeah, I know about the one on the PSN/XBLA/Steam, but... it really wasn't quite up to the level of the 16-bit games at all.
Also, Eternal Champions. Not quite the first game to try mixing the controls and technical skill of Street Fighter with Mortal Kombat's blood, but probably one of the best MK-style games, anyway. Sure, it had its flaws, but there was a lot of ambition in its ideas, and probably would have done a lot better if it weren't one of the last Sega CD games. It'd be nice if it got a proper revival since MK9 is selling so well, but with modern-day Sega, I doubt it.
Hell yes.

Anything on the Dreamcast. Shenmue might of had cult success but it could of been so much more if it had EVERYONE playing it. Ironically, I'd say the same for it's spiritual sequels in the Yakuza series. I also always felt that the old Saturn fighters like Last Bronx and Fighting Vipers never got the acclaim they deserved either.

I know it's not out yet, but I'm disappointed that my thread about Earth Seeker (an action RPG for the Wii designed by Noritaka Funamizu, the director of some of the best Capcom beat-'em-ups and fighting games) got less views and replies than some shovelware horse breeding sim just because it had the Squeenix logo on the package.

Fist II: The Legend Continues I loved the combination of one-on-one fighting and non-linear exploration. There was so much potential to expand on this type of gameplay in the '80s but it didn't take off.
A Mind Forever Voyaging It was such a unique take on the adventure genre, not so much based on puzzles but on trying to "record" events. And even though the political aspects could come off as cheesy, at least it had the guts to take a stance.

I'm going to be a total asshole for saying it, but... I definitely wish the Power Instinct series had more impact. I feel the series does have it's own potential. And if it had, I'd have loved to see Bonnou no Kaihou and/or Goketsuji Ichizoku Matsuri Senzo Kuyou get a US release, because I'd definitely play them if it happened.
I wish Kenka Bancho had more impact, too, for the same reasons. I'd have liked to see the 4th game, and the upcoming 5th game, get US releases. Badass Rumble was a pretty fun game, and I'm glad Atlus gave localizing it a try.

Dark Cloud 2.
Yes, it's flawed, but it feels like a concept that should've evolved further. Instead, it was pretty much abandoned in favor of more tradition action and turn-based RPGs.

God Hand, because beat-em-ups fucking rock, and Resident Evil 2, because not nearly enough games have tried the alternate scenarios system that game used.
