I think it's about neck and neck with the first one.
The dungeon puzzles were a bit more clever in the first, but the combat is better in the second.
The rpg sprinkles the second adds is a bit more cumbersome and the talent tree never felt rewarding, but it beats out the tedious leveling of weapons from the first.
I personally liked the post apocalyptic environments of the first a bit more than the second, but the second has its own charm (particularly the realm of the dead) and you get to visit earth for a short time in the second on top of it.
Otherwise I'd say they're about equal. Both have great level design, at least good combat, and fantastic music. Just all around good stuff. I have a hard time picking one over the other since as I said I feel like they're both just so good. I will say Death's play style is a little more fun to me. Also one thing that makes the random loot a little more tolerable (because you can ignore it) is keeping an eye out for the unique weapons in dungeons. They will pretty much always be better than anything that will drop and it'll make it feel more like the first.
I do hope one day the former Vigil staff will get back together and continue the series, I think Nordic games owns the property now and who knows how they're handling it. It's one of my favorite modern franchises though and I'd hate to see it get a bad sequel but at the same time I don't want it to go the way of Shadow Hearts.
