Outzone is soooo awesome. I could play that game all day.
Looking at it on MAME, there were two versions of it. They have slightly different enemy arrangement and different soundtracks as well (slightly different intro text also). Odd.

Hell, the majority of the whole feckin' Toaplan library is underrated. I'm quite partial to the insanely outlandish beat-em-up/wrestler hybrid Knuckle Bash. It may not be the greatest BEU out there, but the final boss is a massive hulking monster with a pig face.

I didn't notice any differences; initially Version 4 seemed quite a bit tougher than the others with the first group of three rows of enemies immediately blanketing you in shots, but maybe I'm just faster than I used to be. My current highscore isn't too great - just over 300K (not using continues). I suppose it's possible to play the game interminably, as the game awards a new life every 300K (depending on machine settings).

Yeah version 2 should be substantially different from the rest with some different enemy placement, more common super upgrade drops, and different music. If that's not the case than I'm never upgrading these roms ever.

I've played the heck outta version 2 and 4 today; everything seems the same. I'll have to get back on that. The music is exactly the same as far as I can tell - are you sure you aren't basing that off the different stage intro if you skip the introduction cutscene? There's only one set listed in BridgeM1 for the music, for whatever that's worth.
