Ha, I remember this game as a hack called Baby Mario. Quite a difficult one too if I remember correctly.

Sotenga is still around? He rarely shows his face around anymore.

I remember hearing a story that this game was planned for American release, but cancelled at the last minute.

Quartermann's column in an ancient issue of EGM stated that Howard Philips had deemed Upa "not good enough" for the American market. If that's true, then chances are Konami had submitted it for release at some point, and Philips pulled the plug. Makes me wonder what we got in its place... edit: Sourced it thanks to this thread at TNL: EGM #2, Quartermann "...Nix on Howard Phillips! The bow-tie boy blew it in his recent Newsweek interview when he said that Konami's fantastic Super Mario-ish Babyland game was not good enough for the American market." I want to see this Newsweek interview now.

Wait, so this game is any good? I couldn't bother reading that whole article to find out.

Wait, so this game is any good? I couldn't bother reading that whole article to find out. If you can't be bothered to read the article, then who's to say you could be bothered reading what we have to say about it? It'd take you less time to download the ROM and play it than it would to wait for one of us to tell you if it's any good.

Well, I have played the game a number of times but always discarded it as crap. But seeing how long the article was makes me wonder if there might be more to it than meets the eye.
A simple yes/no would suffice.

I take it that if you saw a Tim Rogers article your head would explode.
My Genpei article isn't even half finished and it's 3 times as long.
Shit, this post is too long, did you read that part?

A simple yes/no would suffice. Yes. You're too good to them Kurt. Also should the article probably have a screenshot of Rupa since it seems significant enough.

To be fair to Vokkan, the article doesn't really evaluate the game that much. Most of it is spent on describing the game's rules and play mechanics than it does in judging them. It isn't until the end of the fifth paragraph, where the author actually offers his opinion of the game.
I've played Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa years ago and it didn't really make that much of an impression. Replaying it just now, I can understand why. No wonder the pirated version is called "Baby Mario". It's basically a babyfied Super Mario clone (and not just because of its theme) with an awkward attack system and physics.
I prefer the Wagan Land series myself.

I personally enjoyed the game. Nice early version of SMW2 Yoshi's Island, before Nintendo eventually made it themselves.
However, the original FDS version had way better music than the FC reissue. The version on the Virtual Console is the original FDS one.

Thank you. Then I'll give it a read when my eyesight is up for it.

I don't see much in common between Yoshi's Island and Bio Miracle other than their involvement of infants, but it's been awhile since I've last played Yoshi's Island so...
