"Metroidvania" is still a lame genre label (hence my remark) and I know I'm not the only one who feels that way. At least just ditch the "vania" part and call them "Metroid-types" if we're going to use a game's title to classify them. I've always liked the idea of that, calling them Metroidlikes in a vein similar to Roguelikes, which took the name from the original Rogue. The only addition CV:SOTN made to the Metroidlike formula was adding RPG-style stats, which I feel watered down the previous design mechanic of acquiring specific items to progress. The whole thing became bogged down - but that's a debate for another topic. HG101 has an article on the series: hardcoregaming101.net/wotd/wotd.htm

"Metroidvania" makes sense if we're talking specifically about Castlevania games that uses the Metroid-style format (most of the 2D games after Symphony of the Night). But as a label for an entire sub-genre of platform games like Parish does all the time (both, in 1UP.com and Gamespite), it's a really idiotic term to use. Especially when you apply it retroactively to older games that don't play anything like Castlevania. The only other thing Symphony of the Night added (besides level-grinding) was the sub-weapon system from past Castlevania titles.
The term "Metroidlike" is not perfect, but it's better than just calling them "Metroidvanias" (and yes, semantics do matter before anyone objects to my point).

...and the page of "to 'Metroidvania' or to not Metroidvania" starts again... everytime someone dares mention the word it, it flares up *sigh* but back on topic This game looks amazing. I don't think there's another game (besides maybe Mass Effect 3) that I'm hanging out for as much. WayForward, as always, never fail to knock my proverbial socks off.

Despite the favorable previews, WayForward has decided to cancel it because there just isn't enough interest in 2D games nowadays. HA Or because they feel like the Alien franchise isn't popular in the West anymore!

I- I'm sorry for pooping on your soul like that. I didn't realize I was causing such offense by borrowing someone else's term that seemed more elegant than "free-roaming exploratory platformers with tool-based progression." Doesn't really roll off the tongue, you know? In this case, though, the game's producer referred to it as metroidvania, so I was just passing that along.

Honestly it's an issue of semantics, but I try and shy away from using "metroidvania" for games that are direct clones of Metroid. In cases like that, "Metroid clone" suffices, although sometimes I use the more generic "exploration platformer".

I'll keep using metroidvania just to torque people off.

Damn. Looks like it's gonna be an awesome game.
It's games like this that show that the DS isn't dead yet. WayForward always delivers greatness (unless we're talking about Unfabulous or maybe WWF Betrayal)

"Explorative platformer" is a good choice you know. Or just "Metroid-types" like I've mentioned. The "vania" part is unnecessary and misleading, especially when applied to older games.
