I was just wondering to hear the opinion from some regarding revisions of certain fighters...
If I have SF3: Third Strike, who recommends that I get SF3: Double Impact? I have Guilty Gear X2... am I missing much without GGX? I will more than likely get King of Fighters: Maximum Impact 2 (2006)... what about MI1?

Rasa tells me Double Impact is better than Third Strike, but he'll have to clarify on that.
Maximum Impact...well, the two have completely different backgrounds and soundtracks, but MI2 is definitely superior so you can get away with just that.
And there's really almost no point in getting GGX if you have GGX2.

the differences I can tell between DI and TS are largely semantic (well, that and there are some absolutely goofy characters in TS.)
there's no real reason to get GGX if you have GGXX, unless you are trying to follow the story, or are a completist.
and I absolutely hated MI1, but that's just me.

You have to understand something If you want to play fighting game for casual play with friends and for the single so yes sure, stick with whatever version you have
But if you want to play fighting games for competitive play, to play for really learning the game for all its depht, to play for taking a part in tournaments, for this you will always have to play in the latetst versions in the fighting scene (Not always the new version is the best, sometimes the older versions are better so the fighting scene stick with them). Its means GGX2 Slash, it means Third Strike (only in the PS2 or arcade version, the DC version is awful) and it means Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo arcade version only because it never got any perfect port for home consoles. I don't want to start a new argue but its a fact that those versions are REALLY important for this kind of play, it's not some kind of cash scam.

Personally I like Second Impact more than Third Strike, it feels more like a complete and balanced game to me. While Third Strike has more characters, I honestly don't feel they contribute anything interesting to the overall experience besides Q. Like shido says the Dreamcast version of Third Strike isn't all that hot, the Second Impact port on SFIII: Double Impact is very good and fast by comparison. For Third Strike itself though you'll want the XBox or PS2 version.
The best home version of SSFIIT that's out there is the Dreamcast release if you can get it. It's great in that (while unintuitive) it includes all the original dip switch settings along with original versions of just about every character, so you can effectively strip it down and turn it into a port of World Warrior if you want, etc.
Maximum Impact is cool but is made obsolete by MI2.
GGX is very broken and poorly animated compared to X2 and up, plus the only way you're going to get it is the Japanese Dreamcast version (the US PS2 GGX is GGX+ which isn't quite the same thing).

Not entirely true. We actually got kinda dicked over on this. Guiilty Gear X for the PS2 is practically identical to the DC version - and then a month later, GGX Plus came out in Japan with a bunch of extra stuff, most notably a story mode and playable Kliff and Judgment. All of this stuff made it into GGX2 anyway so no big loss in the long run. I think it was just kind of a lousy move, considering I don't think the original GGX actually made it to the Japanese PS2. They made a nerfed version especially for us. I think.

avoid DOA unless you want a fighter that gets old fast. Sure, it's pretty, but it honestly doesn't last long.
There's a good reason that DOA has never been included at the EVO tourneys, and it's not to piss-off Itagaki. So avoid Dead or Alive 2.

My opinion on DoA has been pretty dang standoffish for a while, but I have never played a single game in the series. Though, I've heard that its fighting system can be rather infuriating, what with all the counters and all. It does look good, but... well, I just dunno.

I have a blast with DoA. Anyone who has friends that don't play fighting games should check it out as a good group game. Everyone can get into it easily and have a blast.

Yeah, but I find Soul Calibur to be better in that regard. That said, DoA are great games, somwere between Virtua Fighter (my fav. series of 3d fighting games) or Tekken.

I'll consider snagging DoA Ultimate then... pending that my family doesn't gawk at Kasumi jumping on top of Hitomi's head and sitting on her shoulders. ;D

Not a bad item to grab, it's $19.99 new at most places now. Plus I like DoA2's system more than DoA3.
