I actually prefer Adventure over the more recent Castlevania games. I don't even have nostalgia for it either since I played it for the first time only a couple years ago. That's why I can't get into it. I first played it when I was on a kid on a friend's Gameboy. The game's better on emulators or GB players or whatever, but trying to make some of those jumps on the tiny, blurry, green screen was tremendously obnoxious. I don't much care for it, although it's better than Haunted Castle, and at least it's not as boring as CV Legends. Great music regardless.

I've never considered Adventure from that angle. That'd probably kill your enjoyment plenty quick! For what it's worth, Adventure plays really well on a Game Boy Pocket. I was lucky enough to find one at a thrift about a year back for a few bucks.
Also, for a laugh I cleaned a stack of cartridges that were sitting around with isopropyl alcohol (it leaves this grayish/steely refuse on a q-tip). Here's how a few of the games stacked up:
MSX2 Akumajo - nearly clean Akumajo Densetsu - dirty Contra - exceptionally dirty Holy Diver - little dirt Shadow Dancer for Mega Tech - clean (as expected)

Belmont's Revenge is by far the best of those three. It has faster paced action, the best controls, and a lot of the cool obstacles and traps and such that you started seeing around the time of CVIII. Plus the soundtrack is completely rocking.

Every Game Boy game sucks 10 times more on an original Game Boy. :P Nothing was quite as painful as Donkey Kong Land, though.
I used a Pocket for Castlevania Adventure, and that works quite well even though there's some blurring on that too. These days I pretty much use my SP for everything (specifically, the SP2 with the much brighter screen; screw the original SP).
But yeah, Belmont's Revenge is the nicer game since it's everything that Adventure is except more polished and accessible. Not quite as satisfying to beat, though, since Adventure has this reputation of being "impossible". Adventure had an infinitely cooler Dracula too.
Legends was the lamest of the three. Cool characters and art, though, and it added an interesting twist to the story even if IGA decided to wipe it from existence. :/ Oddly enough, Legends was the only one of the three I played when it was new. I wished I had saved the box back then considering how pricey complete copies can get.

I love the music for Dracula's Castle Part 1 especially. I honestly don't think I know a faster-paced beat for any game in the CV series... possibly except for Festival of Servants from SotN.

SO this artist you guys are talking about...did she do the redesign for Simon Belmont that had him looking Bishonen? I hated that. Simon should be a tough looking guy, not a girly man!
Anyway, I played CoM, but ended up trading it, as I got frustated at being lost in the castle, though I bought the Castlevania double pack for the GBA a month or so back, and it seems to be the same, though I find if I'm careful when looking at the map screen, I can figure out where to go, or where to check anyway.
However, I still like Bloodlines on the Megadrive (Which I really should buy if there was a PAL release).
Back in the day I wanted Legends for the gamebvoy, but never found a copy (Well...I did, but by then I'd bought James Bond 007 and so had no money. Sac was a sad panda that day)

Gah. I just encountered trevor belmont. Why is the belmont now one hardly ever hears about is so badass? I mean they could make a whole game about trevor like "Trevor Belmont: Eating his Breakfest" or "TreverbelmontVania"

While I think the title of "most bad ass Belmont" still goes to good ol' Simon, Trevor is up there for two reasons.
1) Under the revised timeline, he is the first vampire hunter to actually defeat Dracula- Dracula ran from Leon, leaving Death to do his dirty work, and Sonya was wiped out of continuity, leaving it unlikely Dracula encountered any serious opposition between the time of LoI and Castlevania III.
2) Everyone loves Castlevania III.

They need to make a game about how he got that kickass scar on his face.

2) Everyone loves Castlevania III. I don't object to that! ;D In all seriousness, it just so happens to be my absolute favorite game on Earth, so I just might be biased.

I haven't enjoyed a Castlevania game in a long time. I remember enjoying SOTN when I went through it the first time, but the replay value is really poor in my opinion. Once the thrill of discovery is gone, all you are left with is the actual level design and gameplay. The level design in SOTN and its ilk is around the same level as Metroid 1- that is, borderline awful... a bunch of vertical rooms with platforms connecting long straight hallways. I was hoping by now they would have come up with a good mix of Metroid gameplay with actual Castlevania level design, but no dice. The gameplay is alright... it controls very well, but it's hard to get any challenge out of the game. On the other hand the graphics and music are both excellent. That was pretty much the last Castlevania game I enjoyed. I still think Castlevania II is the best in the series and I would like to see how a modern version of that would be, or a sequel or something. I like the idea of roaming the Transylvanian countryside finding mansions in the woods, etc etc. The level design is pretty awful, but the mansions tend to make up for them. My next favorite would be Castlevania IV, which had great level design and a perfect atmosphere (the music is probably the best I've heard on the SNES). It's not a very hard game (like many of Konami's SNES library), but it's a joy to play through. Following that would be Castlevania III, Castlevania, Rondo of Blood, the N64 games, Bloodlines, the GBA/DS games, the gameboy games, and then Haunted Castle which is so hard it's awful.

Speaking of wich, I found a pretty awesome homebrew castlevania game. It's like a remake of Castlevania II with the haunted castle storyline and graphics ripped from every castlevania
