My gamestops prices suck as we've learned but they manage to have awesome good deals. (And tons of loopholes) They sold "Pheonix Wright + Trauma Center" BOTH (Like buy them both) for 20$ (Though it was damned hard FINDING a copy of trauma centerin that mess) And all kinds of nifty little treasures tucked away.

Gamestop for me is okay for the most part, but trying to procure a DS Lite has been absolute hell. I miss the days when they were still Software, Etc. and carried import Saturn games. That's actually where I got my copy of NitM for the Saturn.
I find that a pretty damn good game store is, strangely enough, Fry's Electronics. They have all sorts of weird and rare games; I managed to get KOF 2002/2003 new for the Xbox just a week or so ago. They also have import handheld games like Bleach DS and Breath of Fire 3.
Another of my favorite stores is Game Dude. It's a huge warehouse filled with everything from Atari games to, well, modern games. Wonderful place to go if you happen to live in LA and are looking for old stuff like NES games.

I hate buying games at EB/Gamestop because they load their floor copy boxes up with stickers and crap. And they store their floor copy discs in these ridiculous sleeves that always end up scratching the discs somehow.
Before I used to just bypass the floor and look in the display case to see if any new & sealed copies were available for purchase. However, now they do this thing where they take a dozen of some sealed game no one wants, tape them together and put them in the front of the case so you can't see into them.
So now whenever I want to buy a new game from them I have to ask if they have any sealed ones, then have to go through the "it's brand new, it's just a display copy" speech from them, and then tell them "no thanks."
I have two stories about this!
1) I was looking all over the place for Call of Cthulhu for the Xbox. I finally found it at a Gamestop... but it was the last one. So of course the case was all screwed up... but damn it I wanted that game! So I bought it, and I noticed a couple fingerprints and one small scratch on the back. Oh well. Of course I then brought it home and it was skipping and causing all sorts of problems. When I brought it back the next day the clerk had the nerve to tell to me that they couldn't accept the return as it was opened and damaged. I was on the verge of flipping out but was able to calmly reason with him and get the refund. This experience soured me on buying display copies
2) Went to buy Romance of the Three Kingdoms X and it was the last copy. The clerk grabbed the disc to put in the display case and I asked to see the disc. He told me, "It's brand new, don't worry." So I asked to see it again and you should have seen this disc! It was scratched and finger-printed all over the place. It seriously looked like a used copy someone found under a couch somewhere. I told him "no thanks" and he looked surprised that I didn't want to pay full price for a game that was obviously used or mishandled.

See I don't think Gamestop is responsible for the prices of new games, I think that comes from the publisher. That's why when a game drops in price, it tends to drop across all outlets.
Naturally, this doesn't apply to older used games, especially the "rare" titles where they make up prices (which still often end up being cheaper than eBay, but are usually really hard to find.)
I don't hate Gamestop, really, just certain stores have been staffed by incompetant morons, or are total messes, or something of the like. The stores I regular patronize are all excellent.

Man, this is one of the few times I'm glad I live in the Godforsaken wastes of West Texas. My last 5 purchases?
Steambot Chronicles PS2: $40 used Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow DS: $25 used Phantom Dust XBOX: $10 used Viewtiful Joe 2 GC: $9 used Metroid Prime Hunters DS: $25 used The deals are so good I don't even mind being horribly dissapointed by all of them except for Steambot Chronicles (which is in the process of having notes taken about it for my article debut)

Metroid Prime Hunters is $35 everywhere I've seen it, out east anyway.
Your Gamestop just sounds really shifty to me. I remember years ago one Funcoland tended to overprice certain new games - it was in a plaza instead of a mall, and certain GBA titles were usually $5 more expensive. But otherwise I've seen them fairly consistent.
Also, the big box stores like Best Buy tend to drop prices on their for clearance purposes. Usually if you see it drop at Gamestop though, it drops everywhere.

I live in Flagstaff-Arizona (specifically NAU) and have about 6 stores within walking distance
Wal-mart Gamestop Gamecrazy Hastings* Target Bookmans*
*Hastings has a great selection and used titles that are usually at least $10 lower than the prices for new copies. DS games aren't more than $40 either. But they seem to have trouble updating their prices. You'll still end up paying most of the cost for a new game when most of the world has already reduced it by a few dollars or so.
**Bookman's is an awesome used media store that sells everything from books, used stereoes, and virtually every kind of video game from any generation. But it largely depends on what is brought in. I actually got Far East of Eden IV complete for only $10 from this place. The actual City locations in Arizona are even better (especially the one in Mesa, so perhaps you can check that out).
if you're still low on options Mazin, you can look for Arcadia-Games Exchange. Their main location was around Thomas&44th Street. . .if that's anywhere close to you.

I live in a town with the world's largest Hastings, and they are crazy hit and miss. For every 5 dollar copy of Star Ocean 3 or Dark Cloud 2, I've seen a 35 dollar copy of Super Monkey Ball DX or a 60 dollar used(!) copy of Grandia Xtreme.
They have probably the best sales in town though. (I got a copy of Radiata Stories for one cent about three months after it came out from there.)

Well i usually tend to do all of my shopping around my birthday at the only time the swap meet comes into town, but as of late they've only had crappy licensed movie games so i'm now no longer shopping there.
