The voting for this was hugely skewed towards Japanese developed games, because the contemporary VGM scene is not all that familiar with many retro computer games. (Large reason: no soundtrack releases.) A few months later I ran another poll focusing entirely on Western developed games, which had a much lower turnout, but featured many more C64/Amiga games.

You'd think that many gamers (at least in a certain age group) would be familiar with songs like Forgone destruction simply because songs like that have become ingrained in memories of many gamers from spending hundreds of hours playing said maps online. Unreal (Tournament) isn't an obscure Amiga game only European PC gamers have heard about, the series was one of the most prominent names in FPS gaming even long after Halo (plenty of console ports as well).

Many VGM fans tend to ignore PC games too, unfortunately. I'll wave the banner for anything by Frank Klepacki, but the focus is largely on JRPGs and NES games. It's just what the audience is familiar with.
