Anyway, I'd like to start soliticiting comments for various tracks you've voted on, limited to the top 100. Keep it between two and four sentences (roughly) and write it in the third person, and it'll be featured in the article. Should we post our comments here or PM them to you?

Keep it between two and four sentences (roughly) and write it in the third person, and it'll be featured in the article. So you want an 2-4 sentence writeups briefly explaining why we like the song, or just explain how the song is great... without saying "I like it because" Like for example: "Scars of Time is a fantastic song that is awesome all the through. The movement from the slower first half to the bigger second half flows well and is just eargasming to listen to the whole way through. Mitsuda's all-time best song."

I got a few song comments ready:
Streets of Rage II - Go Straight
"Yuzo Koshiro distilled Detroit House into a Yamaha soundchip without losing any of its essence. Just to show off, he added stereo panning into this track, as well. Perfect beats to brawl to for just the first of many stages."
Batman (NES) - Stage 1 (Streets of Desolation)
"No one knew their way around Nintendo's 2A03 chip better than the composers at Sunsoft. A purely original tune for a movie licensed game that punched up the rhythm more than Danny Elfman's gothic score."
Final Fantasy V - Clash on the Big Bridge
"Some Final Fantasies may have better soundtracks overall, but none of them debuted this gem. A driving prog rock battle theme as flippant as Gilgamesh himself."

Is this where we're putting our comments for the top 100? Because I've got a couple here if you want to use 'em:
F-Zero - Big Blue A high-octane racing game needs some suitably high-octane musical accompaniment, and Big Blue delivers in spades. From the first tension-inducing opening chords to the driving bassline and manic lead, it's the perfect showcase for the musical potential of Nintendo's then-new SNES.
Duke Nukem 3D - Grabbag Lee Jackson knew exactly what was needed for the theme to Duke Nukem 3D: machismo, swagger and a heavy metal-inspired thunderbolt of a track with one of the catchiest hooks in gaming. Perfectly suited to the game and its hero, it's so good that even metal legends Megadeth recorded a version.
Devil Crash - Main Table Theme A masterpiece of synth-rock with lead "guitar" to put Yngwie Malmsteen to shame, this high-tempo theme is headbangingly catchy, impressively complex and simply so good that it never gets old despite being the only in-game music.

Kurt, would it be too much to ask for an alternative Top 1000 VGM list? I'd be much more interested to know the results if *all* votes would be worth 1 point only.

At this point not really, due to the way I counted up the votes. For every top 5 votes I just copied each one three times, so they're all mixed in. I mean, I could go back and delete them but I'd have to comb through the whole thing and it would take too much time.

I guess if I ever feel bored, I could make the said list myself. Not to say that there's anything wrong with the current list (it's great), it's just that I'd prefer the "1 point for each vote" rule.

I'll be posting the spreadsheet at some point so anybody can do any analysis they like. The three-point rule was to stratify the positioning more. From what I can gather the Japanese poll actually assigned votes for songs from 1-20 points, which I felt was too much.

I have to agree with some of the other sentiments in this thread; I'm disappointed in the overall lack of Western artists.
I mean, Tommy Tallarico's stuff is consistently amazing. Sure, I wasn't expecting his Virgin Games stuff to make it (Cool Spot, Global Gladiators), but I'm flabbergasted that there aren't any Earthworm Jim 2 songs on this list. FLABBERGASTED!
I am super happy that Tower of Heaven and Wiz n Liz made the list though.

Excellent work; it’s a very good list. Here's my sort of review:
It was totally expected and understandable to see in the top 10 the most popular games: Chrono, Mega Man, Castlevania, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear, though I don’t know how Zelda didn’t get in there.
I’m not really surprised about western games being overwhelmed but it's a pity that there are many great songs people ignore. I also think that the best western music comes from the 80's-90's computer era and was hoping to hear more of the likes of Monty on the Run and The Last Ninja.
Sadly, some western series with amazing music such as Age of Empires, Caesar, Legacy of Kain, The Incredible Machine, Heroes of Might and Magic are nowhere to be found. And talking about franchises; Virtua Fighter, Ecco, Darkstalkers, Twinbee, Trauma Center, Ridge Racer, Tekken series are going to be missed in the list.
Aside from its RPGs and Katamari, Namco music seems to be a bit underappreciated. Can't believe there are so few Ace Combat songs and just one from Klonoa and Soul Edge. I suggest people to check out more of their arcade games.
But hey.. Space Harrier, Devil's Crush and Snatcher in the top 100, that’s just awesome.
It's always a nice thing to have some SNK fighters, Cave shmups and a bunch of Touhou games too. However I was very surprised and happy to see music from Darius and Wonderboy (Monster World). It's also cool to see visual novels like Clannad and Ever17, and wow.. I wasn’t ready for Umineko, it was the revelation for me.
Damn.. I just remembered. Cleopatra's Fortune, it was like the best song on the Japanese list and forgot to vote for it.

Here are my comments for the top 100: Deus Ex - Title ThemeA good title theme should prepare a player to play a game; a spectacular one should tell a player everything they need to know about a game before they even begin playing it. Somehow, Alex Brandon conveys that Deus Ex is a cyberpunk thriller filled with intrigue and conspiracies, without a single word being uttered. It is for this reason that Deus Ex's title theme is one of the best in gaming. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest - Bloody TearsBloody Tears is a fantastic song that fills the player with a sense of adventure. When a song makes exploring a game's world an enjoyable experience, then it has succeeded on every level. Later composers for the series seem to agree, as Bloody Tears has been remixed and featured in just about every Castlevania game that has come since, along with Vampire Killer and Beginning. Castlevania: Bloodlines - The Sinking Old SanctuaryAnyone who has played Bloodlines - or Circle of the Moon for that matter - is more than familiar with this song. Played during the Greece stage, the Sinking Old Sanctuary fits the stage both visually and thematically, recalling ancient Greece in all her glory. It lends a weight to the proceedings that might otherwise have been absent, and for this reason the Sinking Old Sanctuary is another classic song in a series known for its outstanding soundtracks. Possibly more to come later. Edit: Fixed a couple typos.

I knew it would be Japan dominated, but I'm pretty surprised how poorly western games fared. But, not being familiar with most of the stuff, even towards the top of the list, I can't really comment on how it all compares. I definitely plan on listening to the first few hundred, at least. Western games were under-represented and games like Donkey Kong Country are hardly the best the world outside of Asia has to offer, but I'm more disappointed with how few of the songs were from games that weren't released in the west. I think the only ones to break the top 100 were Umineko no Naku Koro ni and Mother. I guess nobody should be surprised that a popular vote favors the games played by the most voters, but I'm still pretty disappointed to see only one Lords of Thunder song in the entire 1000.
