I really want to start programing my game and share it to the world as freeware but I have nothing to program on and no exp. with programing but i am an easy learner. The game I want to make is a Mix of Castlevania Metroid GTA and Sims. I guess you can call it "Streetevania" type game. I want it to be side scrolling but give it the kind of Metroid/Castlevania "sandbox" type feel even though you are limited to only side scroling. I came up with a cheesey story that took 5 seconds to come up with and even made 2 sprites. You start out as a hobo and you are framed for a murder and what I want to do with the game is add gangs you can join and custom clothes, custom hair, etc to the main charater, Kind of like GTA:SA. You can join a gang and try to find out WTF is going on, yeah I know cheesey but its a start. I want the final boss to be a Kingpin, druglord, corrupt mayor kind of guy. Please if you have any sugestions I am open for more Ideas just dont be to harsh on my cheesey story lol jk. Sorry about the size

Have you considered using AGS? It would make your programing alot easier, plus I think it would work nicely for this type of game (with a few minor tweeks).

This may make me look vain, but is there a chance you could get someone to make it look prettier? It's a nice concept and all, but the sprites look a little amateurish.

AGS probably couldn't do what he'd want. Look at 1213 or whatever that game was by Yahyze which was a sidescroller. It barely (tollerably but not fun) works and that guy had experience with AGS.
Also don't let anyone dis your sprites, you just need to position them better I think, also I'd suggest simplifying them a little if you intend to have a wealth of items to equip you'd be better off making them more modual. Different interchangable sets that are all animated in the same way.

Hmm you should take a Visual Basic class at your school or somewhere. Its not much but it can deffinitely help you get started.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it. His game idea could very well translate to a quest for glory type of interface, which ags has been proven to emulate perfectly. That said, I know what you are getting at. If it's going to be more action than adventure, it wouldn't be the best of programs. Perhaps the wintermute engine would be a better alternative?

Hello, My suggestion is to give Blitz Max/3d a look. It's a version of Basic that is optimized for writing games. Blitz 3d is geared towards 3d games, whereas Blitz Max offers more powerful 2d capabilities. Blitz languages are very inexpensive (under $100 I think) and there is no problem taking the game and distributing it or even selling it (the Blitz compiler is not needed to play the games). You can get a great book online, Game Programming for Teens that steps you through programming a simple game with Blitz (the demo version is included on a CD with the book). As a warning, Blitz is a real programming language. So it's going to take a lot of work to get your game running... it's not something like Klik and Play or Game Maker or whatever. I really suggest this over Visual Basic for games, as it is meant specifically for writing games. If you want to get into Visual Basic, Blitz is a good first step as it is very similar. You can download the demo at the official site, and you can also get an idea of the kinds of games that have been made with Blitz: www.blitzbasic.com/I have a copy of Blitz3d and it's a pleasure to use. I am slowly teaching myself to program and hope to start releasing some games for free. There are some people (very few) who have reported on the Blitz boards that they are making a living developing games and selling them using Blitz. Perhaps the most famous Blitz developer is MDickie, who makes his living developing games and selling them all by himself: www.mdickie.com/Take a look at his site and see what can be done. Please note that his graphics are not stellar... it's not a limitation of the Blitz programming language, but instead a result of the fact that he himself does everything from sound to programming, to art... and he's not exactly a world class artist.
