I was a programmer on Deus Ex 2 (as well as Thief 3), and still talk to and work with many of the original team. Would you want a Q&A to explain some of the design decisions? I'm not promising Harvey Smith, but I could see what I could do.

Hell yeah, definitely. I've been trying to get commentary from the PR contracts of the places I'm familiar with, but some of the games are so old, that it's hard tracking down people. I wasn't even remotely sure how to get in contact with any of the ex-Ion Storm guys.
Thanks a ton!

I'll PM you my contact info. I'm currently at Breakaway Games in Austin (the Austin branch is dedicated to console development) with several other ex-Ion folks.

Thief: Deadly Shadows is awesome, great job. It's a shame so much of its fan base completely dismissed it before it was even released.

Thief: Deadly Shadows was definitely a great game. I also liked Deus Ex: Invisible War, though the areas were way too small. Some other underappreciated sequels: -Castlevania 2 Most people complain that this game is way too hard and impossible to figure out. However, like The Legend of Zelda, all it takes is a bunch of kids playing it over a summer vacation to finish it without and walkthroughs. I think games have sort of lost this feeling, what with elaborate guides from Prima and such, and of course the internet. Some of my fondest memories of being a kid were playing through some really hard-to-figure-out NES games with a bunch of friends: Castlevania 2, Legend of Zelda, Clash at Demonhead, Hydlide, Legacy of the Wizard. It was really a social activity! -Golden Axe 3 This game gets a bad rep solely based on its medicore graphics. First of all, when you go back and play Golden Axe 1, it's not quite the classic you remember. The moves are few and while the graphics are decent, the only thing saving it is the atmosphere. Golden Axe 3, though less colorful, has a great atmosphere as well as plenty of added moves... making it the only Golden Axe I enjoy now.

Why Devil May Cry 2 sucks:
A. More than half of the bosses are way out of your sword's reach. B. Using the handgun is really clunky and annoying. C. Combine A and B, and you have some spectacularly shitty boss battles. See goddamn Demon Helicopter. D. The combat is pretty boring, as the enemies do almost nothing to defend themselves. E. There's wasted potential everywhere. F. The voice acting is shit; Arius would've been an awesome villain if his voice actor weren't so... horrible... forced... I'm not sure what adjective to use for him. G. Dante himself is pretty boring to play as, although Lucia was a little better in the gameplay department.
'Nuff said.

-Castlevania 2 Most people complain that this game is way too hard and impossible to figure out. Too hard? Everyone who has told me they didn't like it was because they thought it was too easy. Dracula can be killed before he even moves, and when you die you restart at the place where you died. I think it's a great game though, good atmosphere, creepy townspeople, graveyard duck, excellent music: Bloody Tears, that song that plays when you input the password, and the song in Dracula's castle. The combination of that song and no enemies really scared me.

and the song in Dracula's castle. The combination of that song and no enemies really scared me. Agreed, that was really effective stuff for its time. It is too easy overall. The difficult parts are difficult because you don't have the proper weapon/equipment yet rather than because you're not skilled enough yet. Great game though, one of my favorites in the series.

Zelda 2, wow where to start....? Although it gets a bad rep for straying so far from the original template, Zelda2 must be appreciated for what it truely is, one of the finest side scrolling adventure games of all time. Truely years ahead of its time, an action adventure game that feels fresh even today thanks in part to a simple yet perfectly realized combat system. You had to live as much by the shield as by the sword in order to survive. Zelda2 allowed players to avoid random battles years before Chrono Trigger made it "fashionable". Link could learn spells, level up (in 3 different attributes), change shapes and explore a huge overworld a full decade before Alucard came along in SoTN. It remains among the best action rpgs of all time, buried only by the Zelda moniker. I loved this game so much as a child, i thought it so much more realized and complete than the original, that I hoped the next Zelda would continue on the concepts of the sophmore effort. Well... needless to say I've been kinda let down. (If you quote me, use the name 'Ultramar' it's shorter and I use it more often...)

While I agree that Zelda 2 is good, I don't think it's THAT good First, the game was too much hard till the point it became irritating. Second, Zelda 2 did have a lot of things to explore yet it didn't have a lot things to be found. It wasn't worth it, the exploration was too much troublesome. Third, well mabey it's just me, but a lot things in the game didn't make any sense to me. And I'm not talking about real world sense, I'm talking about in game sense. I always had the feeling some choices made in the game were really weird.
But In generally, yeah a good game

By "too hard" I meant that people always seem to complain that the hints are too vague and the game is hard to figure out... for example, using the crystals. Castlevania 2 has possibly the best soundtrack ever.

In my opinion, Chrono Cross' story took a backseat to the world it took place in. Sure there were interesting parts of the plot, but all in all the people/locations that had little to no bearing on the story made the plot more appealing.
MGS2 was a solid game in every way. What made it the target of so many rabid fanboys was the fact that in all the previews leading up to the release, Snake was billed as the main character. It's very possible that if Konami were to release it as a game separate from the MG storyline it would have been better recieved (something tells me it'd be the same about Silent Hill 4).
