.....
Kind of shocking. But I think them saying it's "cancelled" might be overblown. Maybe it'll be like TGS - it's never attended by Nintendo, who held its own show, except...not for awhile.
I dunno. There's a LOT more to E3 than just the "big" companies. It's a chance for some of the smaller, lesser known companies to stand in the limelight for awhile and get some exposure. Plus there's the entirety of Kentia Hall, which must serve some purpose.

I think it's for the best. E3, though a great place to see all the new stuff, was becoming too 'mtv'... so to say. Too many boothbabes trying to get your attention (when it's the games that should be doing that), music coming from everywhere mixing up with each other and creating a cacophony, too many flashes, images and pompous stuff that made you wonder if you weren't actually walking in a live commercial or something.
And all of this from a person that hasn't visited the E3.
It's no biggie, first it was CES, then it moved to E3 and now something new will come out.
Problem is that game shows ALWAYS start out 'small' and conservative, but as they get popular; companies start to make more elaborate booths and then it reaches a point that they just spend too damn much just to have a booth bigger than everyone else.
I'm sure going to E3 was a wonderful experience, but it was degrading into something that wasn't supossed to be. Sad thing is most people aren't going to realize that now, unless E3 actually kept going and the results of this 'casual gamer' era really started to make its mark.
Does a real gamer even NEED booth babes to stop at the Konami or Capcom booth? And if you need babes or loud music to stop at Atlus's or Natsume's booth then I'm glad fucking E3 closed, 'cause that's not a good road to take.

The purpose of e3, as stated in that article, Is the hype really. I can usually get by by just picking up two or three e3 magazines when i plan to make a game list for the year. Now i'm going to have like, nine different subscriptions to different news sites and gaming magazines just so i know when some small developer puts on a show

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the big companies use way more space than small ones? Companies like Valve and Blizzard are going to be renting out way more space than some z-party peripheral manufacturer, and it'll probably cost more depending what hall it's in.

Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft obviously dwarf the rest, but there are several "smaller" companies (Gameloft, Webzen, NCSoft) that put out HUGE booths. The only way I know some of these products are because of this (though they're usually Korean/Chinese MMORPGs I don't give a crap about anyway.) But yeah, all of the weird guys get small booths in Kentia. No one really cares about those.

Good. They had too many non-game developers there anyway. It's just a trade show with people trying to marketing/selling games.
Still, I don't think the E3 will be absurdly canceled, but downsized somehow.

E3 was fun, as in the atmosphere of the gaming industry in general around E3 time, all the speculation was interesting to read.
Sure something new will emerge but I also kinda like the name E3 had a good ring to it.
