"Perhaps the biggest development for PlayStation fans is the announcement that the company plans to finally release some of its formerly Japan-only PS2 games in North America. Going into 2007, SNK Playmore hopes to bring a new King of Fighters compilation to North America, along with its classic Samurai Shodown and Mark of the Wolves titles. Previously, the company was unable to publish these games here due to strict Sony guidelines regarding 2D games, but those guidelines have been relaxed thanks to Sony's desire to keep support for the PS2 alive in the wake of the release of the PlayStation 3"

That's some sexy shit. I wonder what other games we might now see if Sony has relaxed more on it's 3d shit.

I'm surprised. I never thought Sony would do this.

Even if KOF XI and NGBC make it here, Sony is still not forgiven.

I'm not optimistic, nearly identical articles to this were appearing when the PS2 first game out with regards to the PSX ports of SNK games. SCEA will cock this up somehow.
Obviously I'll get anything SNK does manage to squeeze out into the US on launch though.
Shinigami I almost have to agree. For Sony to get a pass we'd have to get the Fatal Fury collection.

I second Shinigami's statement. Sony's policy towards 2D has been a destructive influence on game design.

Ehhhhhhhh... I can understand the dislike against Sony here. Perhaps my cranial combustion was a bit premature, but considering that I seriously thought about importing KoF XI, at least this provides some relief. I'll... remain hopeful myself.

finally, I can actually support a company I like and play with a decent controller.
When you put it in terms like that, you really wonder where Sony was going with that. It's not like someone is going to look at King of Fighters and go "man, this totally represents the entire system in all of it's capabilities! fuck that noise, I'm going to go buy TWO X-Boxes instead!" No, it would quietly be ignored by the masses, picked up by people like us, then eventually by a bunch more people out of curiosity and tight budgets when it dropped to budget pricing. No one's image is really getting hurt here.

Personally? I couldn't give a shit.*
Oh, bad, terrible Sony, forcing SNK to bundle together their ancient crusty 2D games for $20! Yeah, that made selling the games rather less profitable to SNK than a full-priced release would've been, but really this was a value judgement thing. This is one area where, as I understand it, criticizing Sony isn't really warranted (though SNK's position - waiting until Sony would relax rules for PS2 releases - is understandable as well).
*Okay, I admit that part of the reason is that I have Spirits 1-4 on AES ;D

So long as they get Metal Slug 6 over here in some form, I'll be satisfied.
KoF XI would be pretty nice, too. Though I'd like them for the Xbox as I don't personally own a PS2.
