That sort of thing seems like an ideal situation, personally. I'm sure we all have hundreds of games from old systems to complete, along with dozens more for the current generation that we haven't even touched. I think it's great to just wait a year or two (or three, even) after a system launches before picking it up. The price comes down, new functionality might be added, and hopefully the bugs will be worked out by then. It's win / win all around, really. Though if the Next Gen consoles are anti used games or all use online passes you be screwed over playing loads because new copys would be impossible to find of short printed games. If that crap is in the next gen Consoles I will not bother with them.

Depends on the game, but as far as I can tell, Amazon has essentially every game I could want available, brand new. Granted, some of the more rare items need to be purchased on the second hand market, but supposedly the console manufacturers are just going to require people to pay an extra fee to be able to re-register a used game with your own system.
Still shitty, but at least you'd be able to still play used stuff.

To compare though, let's say you got an NES, and your options are: Friday the 13th, Super Pitfall, Athena, Bible Adventures, M.U.S.C.L.E., Where's Waldo, Bad Street Brawler, and X-Men; vs., for the same price, Super Mario Bros. 3 & Castlevania 3. Sure you get 75% more games with the first package, but you get way more bang for your buck with the 2nd. The industry thrives on this kind of stupidity. And it's extremely rampant now that gaming has entered the mainstream. I can't blame the Wii for it since this certainly predates it, but good God, when I worked at the store it was fucking impossible to get people to see this. Everyone would ask for Wii recommendations and I would always recommend SSB Brawl first. Brawl is an amazingly fun party game that your kids will continue to play for years to come. "...But that's $40." Yeah, but your kids will love it forever and -- "No, thanks, I'll take these four $10 games instead." *walks out with Carnival Games and 3 other titles published by Zoo or UFO* why couldn't i just sell you a gun to kill yourself with you FUCKING APE

Plenty of DS games don't need touch support. For the ones that do, wiimote pointing would cover most use cases, although might not be optimal for all. Not that many games need the microphone either. Or, you know, a DS model with tv out like the PSP would be acceptable too. (Well, actually preferably better than the PSP's...). I understand why they haven't made one. The DS design is not terribly conducive to it. But I'd buy it if they did, even given the probably limitations. A lot of other people probably would too. I'd personally be satisfied with a GBA replica that plugged into a Wii's USB drive. (Shoot, even if I don't have a Wii, I'd at least consider buying one of those!)

Actually... I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they have a method of playing DS games on the Wii U. The touchscreen controller seems like it could work well for it. Of course, they'll probably make you buy all your games again as download titles if you want to do it.

The problem with buying so few games when you become more selective is that I dont want to buy a console if I'm only going to get a couple of games for it unless the console is the price of a game. If my brother hadnt bought and PS3 and X360, I never would have played any games for them. They are still pretty expensive, and if you plan to buy everything when it is supercheap, you might be missing an online experience important to some games when that service shuts down. See I don't think this should be a problem if you are indeed being more selective and buying a really small number of games per console, as r0ck3rz suggests. I bought a Wii near launch and I now own 6 games for it (after buying and re-selling a few I didn't care for). I don't really regret spending the up front cost on that because I still got to play Brawl when it was new and I got the few scattered releases I was interested in like No More Heroes and Xenoblade. Plus I'm still waiting for DQX to come out. Contrast that with my PS3 library that has a more substantial amount of kinda-not-so-good games that I bought just because they were cheap used.

If even a fifth of those people buy This Season's Big Release, that's a fifth of a jillion dollars, right into Iwata's silken pockets. What explanation is there for failing to invest in new, quality mainstream titles? Is Nintendo allergic to money?

But as was just mentioned, people will be disinclined to purchase said new, quality mainstream titles when they are not distinguished from the floods of much cheaper crap.

However, I'd never walk out of the store with 4 crappy games even if I wasn't going to pay $40 for one game. I'd probably just say I'd wait until SSB Brawl falls in price and walk out of the store. Of course, since these people are buying for their kids, I'm sure they don't give a shit as long as they don't go home empty handed.

That's the rub. SSB will never drop in price.
