Those concerned gonna respond. Working on it. It's still too early to say, how long it's gonna take for me. Losing interest in gaming, Bumpyroad?! Unpossible! For me, gaming comes in waves. I used to ravenously devour games when I was young. Now I just play a few hours worth each week. I feel like I'm mostly over the collecting part though. I rarely buy games brand new. I have such a long back catalogue of games still wrapped in plastic. I just wait for stuff to hit the $20~$25 mark. Same for consoles. I just wait until the price gets chopped $100 for the newer consoles (like the Switch. Come on Switch. Let's see that price reduction this Christmas). I'm just "losing it". Usually it's like this: I start a game, get stuck, get frustrated and then drop it. Co-op is dead. Friends don't show much interest in it. The last console i bought was used X360 in 2012. What can you do

The thing of it all is that I actually have a lot of free time during the day in which to play games, but I just don't feel motivated to do it anymore. This describes me a lot of times, mixed with what Bump said about how sometimes if a game gets too frustrating then I stop caring.... altho, that mixes with how interested I am. Lately I find my interest levels fluctuate like mad. Like for a week I was totally obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog games but then just as suddenly got sick of them. Honestly though I blame part of it on the way the modern world is. When I was in school I was, well, in school, and gaming was something I did after doing hours of boring, tedious schoolwork which I never wanted to do, and they were in addition to cartoons (weekdays and saturdays, sometimes sundays), or watching Unsolved Mysteries at night. So you got a mix of things all through the day. These days, all too often I find that when I find an interest its easy to over-indulge in it to the point where you've gotten your fill in five minutes. Into Sonic? Oh, buy one of the Mega Collections and spend all your time playing it, or watching speedrun videos, or reviews, etc. Since you can totally control your content streams now and tune out stuff you don't like for the most part, you end up getting bored faster. I also dislike the lack of visibility online. This adds to the problem because if you're not already looking for a thing, you won't find it. Whereas as a kid most new things I found were through looking thru shelves at places like Kaybee Toy Store or various game rental places. This often even makes old-skool feel like a known quantity because everyone always talks about the same "hidden gems." Oh, another guy talking about Metal Storm on NES. We know this. Back in the day it was legitimately new, now everything feels been there done that. I can't even say I'm ready to jump into modern consoles because a lot of that has recently started catering to nostalgia. Oh, I could play Sonic Mania... but its literally a throwback to the Genesis games I'm burned out on, so what's the purpose? (I do wish someone would produce an actual NES cart of Mega MAns 9 and 10 tho... or even a TG16 version. I'm not picky, as long as its physical for a system I own).

I've been playing a lot of old school games and it's renewed my love for videogames. Outside some genuinely excellent games like Dark Souls and Breath of the Wild I just find modern gaming boring and homogenous. Every game is chasing after being cinematic or else wasting the players time with open world busy work. What I like about old games and stuff like Dark Souls and Breath of the Wild is that they don't pretend to be anything other than videogames and let you play and enjoy them.
I do find myself getting burned out on games every so often. The best remedy is to take a month or two off. catch up on some TV shows or do something else. No Point playing for the sake of playing something.

retr0gamer, why don't you just ignore those open-world, cinematic AAA type games and just get into indie gaming? That's where you find the true video-game-y spirit that you had in the 80's and 90's.

I have and there's a few that do have the spirit of the 80's and 90's like La Mulana and cave story. But there's also a hell of a lot that completely miss the point. FPS games that are more arena shooter rather than having actual good game design and platformers with super meatboy difficulty which feel nothing like old school platformers. I played and totally completed Meatboy. Loved it but won't be doing anything similar ever again!

Well, I don't necessarily mean indie games that directly try to replicate experiences from the 80's or 90's. But they have the same to-the-point focus on gameplay and mechanics rather than making things large and 'cool'.

Well, indie games pratically make sure there is always a game for me out there.
But it also helps that i am into most genres, platformers, FPS games, racing, fighting, puzzle, RPG, Visual Novels, Adventure games and more are things that i enjoy.
I only have trouble getting into simulation and grand strategy games, but besides that?
I sincerely have no problem getting into any genre, i will gladly play puzzle games like Hexcells on Steam as i will play DUSK, or shmups like ESCHATOS, or fighting games like Dragon Ball FighterZ, or roguelites like Enter The Gungeon.
Hell, the game i started playing is Fran Bow, an adventure game with horror themes, which doesn't stop me from just playing something like Heiankyo Alien as well.
That being said, i don't play games every day of the year, my interest comes in waves just like with every other hobby, sometimes i get really into reading, other times i get really into watching TV shows and anime and catch up on them and etc.
The only hobby that stays consistent is Podcasts which i always listen to, but besides that, everything else comes in waves of a few months before i go to something else so that i can come back, it helps stop me from getting bored with things.

If anything I would say my interest is pretty high lately. I've been digging into the Genesis library and finding good games I'd basically never heard of before; I've also finished my first shmup ever, Elemental Master (which is an atypical shmup in many ways, and a really cool game). It's definitely better to have other hobbies and interests so as not to burn out, but sometimes what makes the difference is finding something that really caters to your tastes rather than something you feel you should play because it's the latest thing or people say it's great.

My interest in gaming is at a high right now. I got a Switch on release and I got my PS4 last fall so I've been busy exploring their libraries. I also have a pretty good sized library of NES and SNES games that I like to replay periodically. I also have a Retroipe loaded up with stuff.
I think my biggest problem is I don't have half the time I would want to play these games. Between having a baby and weightlifting (my main interest right now, really) and trying to squeeze in watching pro wrestling, I'm pretty booked. It doesn't help that the Playstation store is constantly giving away stuff for free or at huge discounts. I probably just need to put a stop on buying stuff for a while.

I can say my interest for games has a bit waned these days, but probably it's a phase (to think I entered the Game Finish contest...). When I have to pass some time I prefer to read, write, watch a movie or aimlessly browse the net rather than play a game; it's been 2 months and counting that I haven't touched a game on Steam, and similarly when I opened MAME or other emulators it was only for very brief amounts of time. The only "game" that I play regularly, and even then in very short bursts of time, is Pokémon GO, and I don't even consider it a full-fledged game but rather an app.

My interest in gaming stayed strong from 1989 till it started declining in my college years and especially starting in 2012 when my parents put me on medications, took me into social gatherings, asking me to do them favors and keeping up with life concerns.
Even with birthday and Christmas money in my younger years, they sometimes get restrictive of me buying games.
The least I can do with video gaming is mostly listen to soundtracks from several games as well as watch gameplay videos of mostly Japan-made video games except RPGs, most strategy-based and MMORPGs.

It's funny that someone bumped this thread because I have gone basically whole hog on the Switch. Being able to take it anywhere has reignited some genuine excitement about games that I haven't felt in some time (probably since before I apparently posted this thread, which I completely forgot about.)
I'm never going to be a collector again, but I don't feel nearly so down on gaming as I used to, and I just bought a modkit for my switch to make it atomic purple so it looks like an old GBC.

That's awesome :3 I just got a Switch myself, and I've been having a ton of fun playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild on it. The fact that I can play it anywhere really makes it a lot easier to pick up and play, since I don't have to bother setting it up on my TV first if I don't feel inclined to go through the trouble.

It's a thing of beauty. It solves problems I didn't even know I had with the actual physical act of gaming. Being able to play in bed is great. I bought a Wii U on the assumption that I could play my original Wii games in bed on the tablet, but it turns out you can only kind of do that, because you still need to have the whole controller apparatus set up, so unless I wanted to balance the gamepad on my knees and play with a separate controller I may as well have just been playing on the TV. It is absolutely astonishing how poor the Wii U was in comparison to the Switch.
I played BotW on the Wii U and bought it digital like a dummy. When the Switch was announced I thought it was going to be a total bomb and another example of Nintendo having a good idea but not taking it far enough, but I was completely wrong about it. So while I would like to play it on the Switch, I'm not motivated to pay 60 bucks to own it again. If it gets cheap in the future or I can find a cheap used copy I'll pick it up again.
