That's right, there are pretty cheap fatty shells you can get in WACKY colors and they're pretty easy to replace. Dunno if it's really worth it, though. I did this for my girlfriend's DS. And it worked, mostly, but it was a lot of effort and I dunno if I'd do it again given that I'm less in need of extreme frugality. Mind you, I only had to replace the top screen. The biggest problem was probably replacing the hinges. And if I had to replace the bottom screen I probably wouldn't have bothered at all, since the screen cable is really annoying to deal with and kinda inhibits replacement.

Honestly, if you really want the GBA slot, I'd just as soon get a DS Lite. They're pretty cheap and generally hardier than the fats.

I kinda forgot the DSi doesn't have a GBA slot. So yeah, there's no point of getting one when I can get a 3DS instead.

Yeah, at this point I can't see getting a normal DSi. I'd either get a Lite for the GBA slot, an XL for the big screen, or a 3DS.

Really, if you're going to get a 3DS, make sure it has games you want. I've had one for... 9 months or so now, I think, and I've bought exactly 2 games for it, one of which is a re-release of a DS game (Devil Survivor Overclocked.) The other is Kid Icarus.
edit: not counting LoZ: Link's Awakening DX and Shantae.

The way the A and B buttons are positioned on the DS and the inability to configure the controls make it less than ideal to play GBA games on it for me, which is why I'm glad to still have a SP around.

I want to get a GBA SP someday, since I only ever owned an original GBA (at the time I didn't want an SP because I liked the wider design of the original GBA, but at the time I didn't really realize how important it is to have a backlit screen ), and the DS Lite is not ideal at all for GBA games (and can't play older games). Also my original GBA is currently the only way I can play Game Boy Color games, since my actual Game Boy Color was broken/lost years ago, and I don't have a Game Boy Player/Gamecube to play it on at my immediate access. I might want to play through the Zelda Oracle games again someday, and I don't want to lose my ability to do that. I don't have a 3DS. What I usually do with systems that I don't own, is I still keep in mind games that I hear about for them which interest me, and I usually add them to a wishlist of some kind (like in my backloggery), so that I have an easy reference for what games on a system I'd potentially like to play. Right now on my 3DS wishlist I have Beyond The Labyrinth, Frogger 3D, Shinobi, Super Mario 3D Land, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. I had forgotten what Beyond the Labyrinth was, so looking it up I'm not sure if I'd really go for that kind of game today; I'm really not into most any JRPGs today. The other four games still interest me (particularly Mario and Shadow Wars), but they're not enough for me to buy a 3DS; at least at this point. If more games come up that catch my attention however, then I'll probably get a 3DS at that point. I want to wait for whatever next model of 3DS comes out however, so I have dual-analog built in, along with hopefully a better battery.

Yeah I'll hold off on the 3DS til' it has the inevitable re-design done- I imagine Kid Icarus and Resident Evil will be cheap as chips by then too. Question - anyone got a remotely decent backlight to recommend for the old style GBA? My hands were too big for an SP and I couldn't find an afterburner kit despite extensive googling!

The more people say the 2-Pad redesign is "inevitable", the more I hope Nintendo digs in its heels, just to deny those people their self-fulfilling prophecy.

All those dead consoles, no wonder people are burning out I know discs was a huge part of my decision to go with retro emulation. Kind of my own fault though, but there was no precedent to tell me otherwise: I started using these disc books in order to save room. I guess they're more for CD's, but I doubt even CD's wouldn't get scratched in them over time. I dunno, it was a good eye opener for me anyway, because I was where most gamers probably still are. Just blowing what I had for money on more, more, more. I had maybe 80+ games for 1 system, and that's just ridiculous. I mean, yeah you do worse with emulation, but you're also discovering titles you didn't know about, and well, the NES was the NES . ...but, yeah, when you have over 80 games, and you might feel like replaying all of 5 of them, there's something wrong.

*edited since if I actually saw where this went, I probably wouldn't have said anything*
Although, I'll say this again. You might wanna keep your systems and get flashcarts. Like for NeoGeo, you can pretty much put the complete library on one card.

It's a little hand-holdy up front, sure, when it gets good, it gets really good. Aside from that, you are right though. At this point, people should know what they're getting into if before buying a Nintendo system. edit... I think a redesign is going to happen, but I definitely have my doubts about it having a second pad. Unless the majority of games going forward are only flat out not going to work on the old model without the frankenstick, then developers are still gonna have to design their games to work with only one pad anyway. It would either fracture the hell out of the userbase, or become yet another poorly supported feature.

Oh, I know all about Pushmo, I just haven't had any inclination to buy any games lately.
