I've been re-playing through MGS2, and realized the reason I put the game down in the first place: the camera sucks. I got to thinking, and realized that many Japanese games, in particular, have this problem. It's intensely frustrating to be unable to look where I want without having to switch control modes.
Speaking of control modes, that's another thing that is simply retarded: having the control scheme change dramatically just because the player is in a different view mode.
Seriously, the frustration level is just too much for me to deal with as a gamer. How do people cope with such uncooperative controls and camera?

MGS2 wasn't so bad because there was always the radar to help with stealth. MGS3, though, is bordering on unplayable (Subsistence helps a lot in that regard, though).
I find that I'm more willing to put up with a crappy interface if the story is interesting and rewarding, or if there's unlockables that I want to get. But then, there's only so many times that I can get killed by a poor camera angle before I decide to shelve the game for a while (or even trade it in).

The controls and the camera in the original MGS initially annoyed me, but I've since gotten used to it. And Weasal is right about MGS3 - you literally need to go into first person view every few seconds just to see what's in front of you. I only played a bit of Substinence but the new camera seems much better.
It seems that a lot of Japanese games have an aversion to user-controlled cameras. I've been told that, genetically, the Japanese as a race has a higher proclivity for motion sickness, which is why they tend to use fixed cameras more often. (Also could explain why FPS games don't always tend to go over well, but they apparently do have a hardcore following.)
Actually, anyone play any of the recent Dynasty Warriors games? Those are some of the most popular games in Japan, and I remember that, at least in 3, you couldn't directly control the camera. You could only recenter it. Have they fixed that?

Maybe that explains it. I popped in the original Tenchu the other day and just about vomited. Then I popped in the most recent Tenchu and realized that there still was no camera control and you had to go into "free look" mode to see what you wanted to.
It infuriates me having to wrestle with camera control just to accomplish what I want to do.

Agh, the problem with the original Tenchu wasn't even the camera angle- it was the hyper glitchy AI- when the enemy apparently spotted you...Through a damn wall! Then you got to the end of the mission and found out that it didnt count that- even though you went out of your were to do an extra half hour of stealth kills to make up the score. Glitch-me-don't

Nope. I do like subsitence's camera much better though. The regular camera is irritating in bossfights

Yeah, that's something that's always bothered me. wildweasel nailed it when he said that the radar was helpful.
The camera in Substistence fixed this to a certain extent. The problem with it though was that it was easy to miss seeing an enemy since the camera was facing a different direction (I like to look both ways before crossing). Although this could be blamed on the size of the areas you were in (games like Splinter Cell and Tenchu has smaller fields, which made it easier to find enemies).
Dynasty Warriors: No, you can only fix the camera still. The only thing the right analog stick has only ever been used for taunts (in 4) and Musou Rage (in 5). Why a camera stick hasn't been implemented is beyond me (by the time DW9 rolls around maybe).

I've heard a lot of people complain about the camera in Tenchu 3. Don't know, it never bothered me, it felt comfortable. On the other hand, when I played Thief it was hell, stealth game in first person is such a bad idea: you can't see who come behind you, you can't see your exact location, your view is so limited. bad idea.

If you ask me, there's always someone complaining about the camera in 3D games. If you don't have anything bad to say about certain game; blame the camera.

OMG liek, DMC3 sucks because of the camera and the enemies are cheap!
I noticed Snake Eater's camera was zoomed in a lot more than MGS2, but it didn't make it unplayable. Whenever I needed to see what was in front of me I just pressed R1. And like Paramedic says, "If you just run around like an idiot you're going to get caught." Yes, crawling is the way you're supposed to move in this game. Don't like it? That's what the Spider Camo is for.
