I couldn't see the wood for the trees. You meant this image: I can't see the screen you're referring to - could it in fact be a manji? (Scroll down in the link) Zelda on the NES has one too. Also, random Googling implies this is also available on Android. I think.

The manji goes the other way round. But anyway, the typical Japanese impression would be somewhere between "hey, an inverted manji!" and "hey, some emblem of some army that fought some war somewhere at the other end of the world! I heard they had really cool uniforms..."
giant walking asses.
Fying! that's even better.
About the swastika, that isn't one, actually, and it isn't a manji either. It's another symbol that was used in Northern India for a long time as a sign of luck. Some British soldiers stationed there when it was a colony brought it back with them and painted it on or above their house's door, as they saw it in India.
And weirdly enough, the Aryans were an ethnic group from that same region.
So basically, nothing to do with Hitler.
Edit: mmh, the Playstation version seems to have been ported to Android, indeed. Well, I can't do a thing about it, I don't have any device running it!

Edit: mmh, the Playstation version seems to have been ported to Android, indeed. Well, I can't do a thing about it, I don't have any device running it! I grabbed it, it's free too. Doesn't support Xperia Play controls so it's touch screen only, and pretty sluggish. Plus it seems to crash a lot. I haven't played the other versions but it looks pretty similar to the PlayStation version. I THINK the death animations may be new because they're different from the pics you have. I got attacked by the walking ass and his, uh, explusion was green, so that's a little less gross. Is it possible to take pictures of Android software like you can on the iOS?

On both the wonderswan and Playstation versions, you can face different directions as often as you want before pressing the button to take a step in that direction; that way you can always check where the monsters will go once you move. And it looks like the touch-screen version only allows direct movement, but I may be wrong.

I could only find the Wonderswan version and aim to test it out myself.

I think I prefer the WS version, myself. It's nicer when the scrolling is not hiding a monster or two. And the b&w has a certain charm.

Great article. I appreciate how well-researched it is, what with the explanation of the title and info about the artists and such. It seems like most people who bring up this game don't have a clue about the title.
The board that looks like a manji probably isn't the best choice for a screen shot comparison, though. Westerners never seem to learn that there is more history behind that kind of symbol than just the swastika. I knew a guy online many years ago that actually got hate mail for putting up a Zelda screen shot on his web site.

Sure, it's gotten nothing to do with Hitler, but both the Nazis and the Japanese took the symbol straight from India, where it's called suasti (see the resemblance to swastika?), so it's all basically the same, just used differently and named differently, but still taken from the very same source.
