For the Summer of 2012, we're going to mix things up a bit by hosting the first GC9X Summer of Love. Rather than vote on this month's game, we'll instead be playing Gauntlet II, but with a twist. As we all know, Gauntlet II isn't much fun by yourself, so this month we'll be playing it together live! Here's the deal: Over the month of June, we'll all be playing Gauntlet II together, whether that means on an actual arcade machine, via MAMEHub, some other matchmaking service, or on an NES with a multitap. At the end of the month, a few members of HG101 will meet together to play Gauntlet II on an actual arcade machine live, after which they'll record their impressions of the game. All other members will also gather together, either on an actual machine of some kind or online, to record their impressions in the thread. Obviously not everyone lives close enough to do this in person, but the idea here is to play this game together any way possible. Don't have Gauntlet II, or absolutely hate it? That's fine! We have plenty of other games to play, including a few non-canon ones. No matter which version or which game you decide to play, this should make for an interesting discussion! We're still hashing the details at, so feel free to ask questions! More surprises are in store for the months of July and August, so be on the lookout! Previous GC9X Threads:

If you told me Gauntlet needed a 22 page manual I'd tell you that you are completely crazy. But apparently that's basically how many the Genesis version took. Obviously no manuals available for the arcade versions (afaik). Also I'd recommend giving a specific clone Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters a try. The arcade version is one of the easier ones to get emulated and has the best graphics but the Atari ST version has incredible music/sound design they actually sync together almost seamlessly like proto-Rez.

I'm pissed because I missed out on getting that and they took it down. I've got the original Gauntlet on XBL if anyone wants to play that, btw.

I gotta admit, it's gonna be kinda chaotic. I'm starting to poke at Gauntlet II on MAME right now. I'll be back with questions and impressions.
I was thinking that, for those of us who can do this on an actual machine, we should have a set goal of how much money we'll spend. Because it is, of course, beatable by anyone with infinite moneys.
UPDATE
AFAIK there's no benefit to slogging through Levels 2-5. It's perfectly fine to warp to Level 6. How many levels are there in this game, anyway?
UPDATE ADDENDUM
Monster generators DO NOT generate monsters off-screen. So whenever you happen across one, backtrack if you can. Gives you a chance to kill off the handful of monsters that appeared AND you can sorta shoot off screen and run after your shots to hit the generators before they can spawn a whole wall of ugly to kill you. It's slower, yes, but I'd rather have my health tick down one HP per second than four HP per second.

I have G2's arcade version on PS3, if anybody's in. Is Gauntlet 2 no longer available for purchase on PSN? Because I can't seem to find the game.

Yup. Unless Warner Bros. pulls a MK Arcade Kollection and releases a Gauntlet I&II double-pack on PSN and XBLA, there's no way to play them, unless you can find the trial for the first game online and unlock it that way. I don't know if you can do that with Gauntlet II, though.

This is my inaugural post. Hi!
Got an Xperia Play off ebay a few days back. Put MAME4droid on it, and Gauntlet II runs perfect. Slick! Looks like I'm in. I intend to get adequate enough to fill a slot in a netplay game, but I haven't decided on a character yet. When playing solo, valk is easymode (like Nethack!), but the rest of the characters have roles to fill in a multiplayer game (as I understand it).
My past Gauntlet experience is pretty minimal. I had the (unlicensed) Gauntlet for NES back when I was a wee little thing, and I loved the game, even though it kicked my ass. I'm surprised at how similar the arcade Gauntlet II is! Guess the NES port was pretty competent.
I've been playing single-credit games, and I've only been able to get up to the 6th level. Amusingly, I never even considered attempting the door in the first level, so thanks for that, xerxes. (Actually, I think I tried once, and got mauled by a million zillion ghosts. And got game over. On the first stage.)
I hope this GC9X is a success! I've been looking for an excuse to participate, and my new phone gave me one.

Welcome Kutan!
Also I'm wondering...should we make Get Medieval *available* for the month? Especially if we can get its netplay running because damn why is Gauntlet causing so much trouble online. My god...it's like one of the quintessential multiplayer games of the arcade.

I still have my original copy of Get Medieval and it won't even install because it isn't compatible with 64-bit Windows.

You could PM NamelessFragger, he's got a version hanging around that'll work on 64-bit Windows.
