I recently learned of a way to deal with the "ghost hallway" of level 4 in Gauntlet I, which has been a constant source of frustration for all players of the game, pro and newbie alike. I should probably upload a video of it sometime. Please do! Actually, I'd be really interested in any techniques you can show off in video.

See, this is why I suck. I just rush through the treasure and completely kill that kind of narrow shot. It usually doesn't occur to me that I can do stuff that slowly... something about the little hit points dribbling away while I stand there that makes me want to, you know, not just stand there. But yeah, congrats you made the twitter feed!

Haha! Pretty cool. Reminds me of the end of Golden Axe, where everyone busts out of the machine and into the streets.
BTW, sorry for the podcast being so late. It's all my fault. Everyone else's bit is done except mine. But since there's no game to announce for July (four more tournaments, actually) I figure I'd rather wait and get this thing as good as I possibly can. Thanks for your patience.

IT'S FINALLY DONE.You'd think with the ridiculous delay that it'd be a mammoth, gargantuan episode. But no. It's by far the shortest we've ever done. A full 50% shorter than the King's Quest V ep. Thanks to Bobinator for coming on to talk Gauntlet and tournaments. And thanks to muteKi for supplying a Malmstein-worthy fugue.

Watching that video, its strange that Ed would blame specifically the Warrior and Wizard for the infinite play trick, because it can be done with anyone. I wonder what that's about? It does explain the Wizard and Warrior getting nerfed like they did, even if it doesn't make sense. I can't say I agree about Gauntlet I being better than Gauntlet II. The levels are much more interesting and are not cloned, there are a lot more powerups and game mechanics that help even the odds, and there is a LOT more food (at least if you pick the Valkyrie or Elf). Yes, the acid puddles are extremely annoying due to their random nature, but I think the added content is worth their presence. One Glenn Mandelkern (aka, Orange Elf) actually took the trip through all 999 levels. Or, well, increased the level counter that high, there are only 108 levels in Gauntlet I, 102 in Gauntlet II. It just resets to 8, so no kill screen . I think Ed Logg and co decided to make it go that high intentionally just in case people kept switching off throughout a day (I imagine it was a good incentive to put money in just to keep a marathon alive). Oh, and before I forget again, there is actually a mod for Gauntlet II. You can pick it up here: www.lord-smeagol.co.uk/ It does work in MAME. It's not bad! I was expecting a Kaizo Mario sort of deal, but the levels I've played are actually well made and fair.

In the podcast you mentioned that there's a certain level of, I guess, "possession" of an arcade cabinet that's respected among players. That is, that people would request permission to join a game with someone already playing rather than dump a coin in and just go for it.
I was wondering if that was something that predates, say, the fighter boom; I can definitely see why not interrupting someone's game (and possibly beating them, preventing them from finishing it) could be seen as a faux pas in a lot of cases. Does anyone know if it goes back earlier than that?

The levels are much more interesting and are not cloned, there are a lot more powerups and game mechanics that help even the odds Good point. Most of the stuff added in Gauntlet II does make the game more interesting. But I still think it is less fair than the very first iteration of Gauntlet. If only we could somehow blend the two... Yes, the acid puddles are extremely annoying due to their random nature, but I think the added content is worth their presence. The first time you see them there's, like, 20 of 'em! They take off too much health and are too difficult to kill (potions only right?). You can't easily avoid them, especially not in multi-player games. So they really only serve to drain precious life. Sorry, disagree! I was wondering if that was something that predates, say, the fighter boom; I can definitely see why not interrupting someone's game (and possibly beating them, preventing them from finishing it) could be seen as a faux pas in a lot of cases. Does anyone know if it goes back earlier than that? Ed Logg was saying that this respect for lone wolves was a Japanese thing. So if they were doing that with Gauntlet, it definitely pre-dates fighters over there. I think it stems from the broader culture over there that respects personal space. Logg said that in the United States, when Gauntlet came out, people would just pop in a quarter without saying a word. My understanding is that, in American arcades, it was common practice to "quarter up" (place a quarter on the machine when the current player is about to lose) since way back in the 70s. I don't remember ever seeing anyone do this, but I was too young to really notice that sort of thing.

I was expecting a Kaizo Mario sort of deal, but the levels I've played are actually well made and fair. A few days ago, after testing a minor Gauntlet 2 bug, the WRONG CHECKSUM message when closing MAME made me curious. The checksum wasn't a problem, as I had my custom level ROMs enabled, but I wanted to see if they were anywhere else. So I did a Google search on the SHA1's ... and found: github.com/Robbbert/hbmame/blob/master/docs/release/src/hbmame/drivers/gauntlet.cpp Then searching for "Orange Elf" led me here. I'm glad you like the levels and find them to be fair. We didn't want to scare away the players by making them too nasty; they were built for coin-op, where repeat play is the key to profits. There are some scary things, like invisible Ghosts and an invisible Dragon! But there are also rewarding secrets ... and some teases! Have fun with them! Lord Sméagol

I'm fairly late to the party here, but the site Lord Smeagol refers to appears to have died. Is there any other source for your alternate levels for Gauntlet II?
