wow what a game. I fired it up tonight facing the 3 dragons not expecting to win. It was more of an on-going learn bit-by-bit how to best beat the dang thing. When I lost men left and right, and had something like 7 soldiers left, I said I had no chance, but kept playing to level up. But I managed to destroy the right head.... made my way to the left, down to 5 soldiers now.... killed the left... and only the middle remained, with barely enough firepower to beat it (Max, Zylo and one wizard). I had the geezer standing on the right pothole (so no skeletons would come out) and I had Guntz on the left. There's nothing like beating a game you been playing for over a week, when you least expect to beat it. My question is, are there two endings? I thought I had the bad ending.... SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!They were talking about me perishing and guarding the Dark Dragon. I sat through the credits feeling a bit ticked my guy suffered such a fate. But after the credits, they had some villager bloke speaking to what we assumed to be a robot... til the screen scrolls and you see your guy! "What is your name?" "My name.... you can call me...." He turns to look at you. THE END sweet!

(Spoilers)
Later games in the series confirm that Max did indeed survive, and that he went off to start his life over.
Shining Force 2 reveals that some members of the original Shining Force realised this and chased after Max.
There was also a GameGear Shining Force game that acted as a bridge between 1 and 2 that featured Max as a playable character again.

Didn't the Game Gear Shining Force games (the first two, anyway) get remade for Sega CD? Or is Shining Force CD considered a completely different entity?

Didn't the Game Gear Shining Force games (the first two, anyway) get remade for Sega CD? Or is Shining Force CD considered a completely different entity? more ported than remade- and they added a bonus chapter as well as a super, duper boss battle. I would recommend grabbing its rom- cause I got to the end of the second chapter and then didnt have the memory on my Mega/Sega-cd for the 3rd parts save

The original Shining Force still holds a very special place in my heart (though ironically SitD and SF II hold a dearer one). It's still one of the first and best strategy RPGs of the day, helped innovate the genre, and featured the Shining world, of which I have a great fondness for (and plus Dark Sol remains one of my favorite video game villains- at least in his SitD and original SF I reiterations). Never the less, the ending of the original was pretty cool, though I'd have been amused if they'd taken it a step further a la Phantasy Star II and not included the extra scene after the credits.
