Suppose Technos Japan never went bankrupt, and went on to make games for some of the next-gen consoles such as the Playstation 1 & 2, N64, Dreamcast, and the Gamecube. Do you think their key franchises (Kunio-Kun & Double Dragon) would have done well in 3-D?

No, but maybe on their second game, if finance allowed.

I suppose the Nekketsu universe would work well as an MMO game (in the style of River City Ransom). But 3D? I don't know if it'd work that well - part of Kunio's charm came from the simple controls. In 3D, however, it might make things a little too complex.

Probably wouldn't have survived. If anything, they would probably do better making a new RCR for the DS.
...There wouldn't be any touch screen features, just easy access to status menus and such.

That idea I like- the stats on the top screen thing- even if that is a rather standard DS lack of creativity cop out... A 3d version of RCR/Street Gangs would suck just as much as every other 3d scrolling beat-em-up did though- I just think its a game style that doesn't translate well due to the targetting issues etc... Some genres just can't do 3d- seen Metal Slug 3d? I think its a brave effort to try to make the game 3d...but it just doesn't feel right...

Yakuza is a joke by comparison.
Anyone who likes the Kunio game's gameplay needs to get The Warriors (preferably the XBox version). It's easily the best 3D beat'em up that exists (surpassing even Die Hard Arcade and Dynamite Cop!/Dynamite Deka 2) and really is the ONLY one I've played where the attacks have the same visceral feel as its 2D bretheren. Incredible sound design as well. The movie it's based on and another one (Streets of Fire: A Rock n Roll Fable) are the two movies upon with ALL early beat'em ups are based on.
If it got a PC port some smart person would mod it to have Kunikario style characters, rip in the River City Ransom music and it would be the best game ever made.

Speaking of The Warriors, it is believed that the American version of the first Kunio-kun game, called Renegade, was inspired by that movie. Although the American version was vastly inferior compared to the Japanese original, it did provide a basis for Technos' other signature franchise, Double Dragon.

That is correct, US Renegade has the move blatant similarities.
Awesomely, you can unlock a Double Dragon homage in The Warriors game. There's a "Warriors" arcade cabinet in the hideout that becomes playable after the game is completed. Begins with Mercy being taken away by the other gangs and everything. You play as Swan and Ajax and go from left to right busting heads.

Isn't The Warriors by Rockstar? They have released a lot of crappy and overrated games.
