Not a game that traced an image but a tv show taking stuff from a game. It looks like someone on the South Park staff might have been a Mark of the Wolves fan. The bottom pic is from Good Times With Weapons the episode where they get the ninja weapons.

Donovan on the American poster for Darkstalker's looks very familiar. Anyone have any ideas? Donovan from Darkstalkers poster is very different form the ingame actual sprite of the said character, on the poster his pose is reminiscent of many poses seen in videogames and movies posters: many will think of Aladdin on Genesis (1993) -as it has been proposed 2 posts ago- or even the earlier Wizards and Warriors X on NES (1985) : Although Donovan wields a scimitar in an oriental outfit , his muscles and face seem inspired by Schwarzy in Conan the Destroyer (1984) in a very similar pose : The famous Conan pose being rehashed to death starting with an interestingly close Lou Ferrigno in Sinbad of the Seven Seas (1989) wielding a scimitar . Donovan's face in the Darkstalker poster is really close to that of Ferrigno's , or let's say a cross between Ferrigno(especially lower jaw, nose, mouth) with a bit of Schwarzy thrown in the mix. All following pics are from the Sinbad movie aforementioned :

Out of curiosity, for the Ultima III/Xanadu ripoffs, which version of Xanadu is that picture from? I'm running the PC88 version and the borders are different - they don't have those red bricks.
Someone e-mailed me about this so I've been digging up some more examples. I found one of the grocer...this one isn't as much of a ripoff as the posted one of the weapons shop, but it's clearly modeled after Ultima III's.

Here's another one from Tumblr A different Chase HQ flyer, this time featuring Don Johnson as seen on Miami Vice, in a pose which seems awfully familiar but I cant remember where its from ( and I'm too tired to go through the article right now I feel like its been taken from Miami Vice as well). Funnily he still has noticeably large hands just like the partner in the other flyer. And speaking of partner, he looks lot like Michael J. Fox now. Maybe he's also traced from something?

It also looks like the cop in blue has just a forearm attached to his shoulder. A very aggressive one, at that.

I found who one the characters from Murder on the Atlantic is. This jolly fellow with the pipe is Philip Mortimer, from the Belgian "bande dessinée" (comic) series "Les Aventures de Blake et Mortimer", which was originally published alongside Tintin's own first adventures and is still seeing new releases to this day. Here's the exact picture this seems to have been lifted from: Also, and sorry if it's already been pointed out it's so obvious, but this title screen from Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja on the Amstrad CPC is very clearly Robocop (from when he was doing kung-fu movies): (Thanks to Super Adventures in Gaming)

Can't remember where I've seen this before, but I definitely have. Here's the cover to Power Athlete. Anyone recognise the guy in the middle?

A couple of days ago mobygames reversed their site "update" from earlier, which is a good thing I was just browsing and noticed this one.. Probably both from the same source artwork. Notice how some of the cloud shapes are similar in both pictures, for example just above the cockpit. ATF: Advanced Tactical Fighter (C64, 1988) <-----> F29 Retaliator (Amiga/Atari ST, 1989)

Hmm. I almost wanted to say that the devs between both games were the same, but it looks like even that's close-but-not-quite: ATF is by Digital Integration, while F-29 is by Digital Image Design. Nothing I've researched indicates that they're the same company...
...Further research even seems to indicate that the plane depicted in both pictures isn't even real. F-29 uses this artwork to depict the Lockheed F-22, which only vaguely looks like the plane in the picture.
What would be really helpful is if we could find the "original" artwork or perhaps an artist credit.

Turns out that in 1988, Lockheed Martin commisioned an artist to paint pictures of their new F-22 fighter. The boxart of "Fighter Bomber" also looks like it might be taken from some other original artwork, although it could also be specially made for this game. I think the plane is an Panavia Tornado F3, not sure though... And the Amiga cover for "Epic" looks like it's put together from various sources, I did some searching but I couldn't find anything. Maybe someone on the forum here will recognise anything familiar..?

The pilot's helmet/head looks a bit like those of the X-Wing pilots.
