I second Square-Enix's convoluted titling. Kingdom Hearts is really guilty of this, and many Final Fantasy titles tend to go bananas with awkward titles, too. Being pretentious doesn't earn you cool points. XD

If I may just level against nearly any game that dares to call itself "Legend of ______"... For the record I feel "_____ Senki" reads much better when translated as "_____ War Chronicle/s"

It's interesting that we don't have more "Story of" or similar titles given all of the Japanese games with "monogatari" in the title. Seems like games with "densetsu" in the title just about always go with "legend" rather than getting more creative with the Western title. Not that I have a problem with faithful translations. The blame lies with the Japanese for relying on the same overused words over and over.

While we're complaining about naming conventions rather than just individual names :
Let's stop ending RPG or Adventure game names in "-ia" or "-ica", please.

I always thought that Dart (legend of dragoon) was a really, really goofy name for your protagonist.

Actually, she's my favorite character. My hatred for "gun games" was more for games that centered around shooting. Individual characters who used guns were fine, as long as that wasn't the focus of the game. "Devil May Cry" was definitely intentional. The idea is that even a devil is given permission to cry -- as in, "devil, you may cry if you wish." It's meant to be more "faux poetic" than anything, and was played up quite a bit in the first game, to such an extent that the bar changed its name at the end from Devil May Cry to Devil Never Cry, since all of Dante's sadness had been wiped away. Cheesy as hell, but... that's Devil May Cry for you! It may be an action game, but part of its appeal is its overuse of cheesy melodrama -- just look at the ending. "Just like the sky, I think my tears are drying up!"... or whatever that line was. The game is full of dramatic cutscenes that were meant to make you go, "Oh, COME ON!" because they were so stupid... and that's what made it so entertaining and charming. -Tom

I thought Devil May Cry was just a Japanese corruption of devil-may-care.

Well, I'm pretty sure that's where they got the phrasing from, but the change from care --> cry was definitely intended.

Going by the Japanese pronunciation, Gynoug is actually "Jee-Nohg".
On that note, Esp Ra. De. is "Esp-ride".
I've heard VVVVVV being called "V-6" too. But I just say all of the Vs.

Does that mean VVVVVVVV would be a healthy tomato-based drink? -Tom

Got a subtitle example, Nightmare of Druaga would of been a okay name on its own but they decided to put the subtitle "Fushigino dungeon" in the western version.

Yeah, I don't think that's a fair example since Nightmare of Druaga is a fusion of two series: Tower of Druaga, and Fushigino Dungeon / Mysterious Dungeon. So when you're combining two series together, it makes total sense to put both names together.

I kind of like "V-6". I'll call it that now when I need to talk about it out loud. As for characters with bad names, I always thought General Ahkboob from Total Carnage had a terrible name. Ahkboob doesn't exactly incite fear and his pun name is too weak to be funny. It just doesn't work.

I should of elaborated on that point sorry.
