She kinda looked like an Americanized LttP Zelda. "sorta" the closest to the games as far as western adaptation designs go. Don't have any real attachment to that side of the series so I cannot comment on other things, I laughed at her response in the video though.

I've never played Wand of Gamelon, but it's certainly on my list of things to try. I've always found Zelda to be a little overrated, but I get the feeling that these games are not nearly as bad as their reputation makes them out to be. Sometimes I wonder if most of the hate comes from people watching the cheesy opening movie on Youtube instead of actually trying the game out.

If I remember out of the two games this is the one that CD-I emulation doesn't work on yet. I wish someone would help me setup a non-commercial CD-I emulator I could use. I got as far as an error screen from Christmass Crisis but that was it.

I really don't get the hate the animation gets. Its rough and its not in the same style as in the manuals, but then NES link looks nothing like the drawings in the manual anyway. In game he looks squat and fat *shrugs*
I suspect its just one of those bandwagon things, similar to how some movies and songs become known and joke about as hated, yet when you try to pry into why its hated, you find....(whatever it is ) is hated because (whatever it is) is hated, lol.

I've played the Zelda CDI games and they are pretty good. I can imagine why people hate on them. CDi emulation is dreadful at the moment and both games play terribly especially since gamepad support was only added recently to it (I think, it certainly wasn't when I tried). Also getting a working CDi can be difficult and finding a gamepad for one even more so, the game plays atrociously with the standard infrared unit. I got my CDi because it came with a gamepad and still had to replace the CD unit, there were no tutorials at all online for it and I'm pretty sure the one on my blog is the only one online.

"Lynched" is a racially-charged term; we should avoid using it if at all possible.

In game he looks squat and fat *shrugs* No way. The actual in-game graphics of the CDi Zelda titles are not that bad, but the animated FMV scenes are just plain hideous. I don't know why you're comparing them to the NES games, since at least those were still aesthetically pleasing despite the technological limitations. Their bad reputation are pretty much due to the FMV scenes, since that's the only aspect people mock about those titles. In fact, you hardly see anyone criticizing the actual games themselves. Same thing with Hotel Mario. Note that people hardly mention the third CDi Zelda title, the one with the live-action FMV.

I'd give em a try, but have been too lazy to try and emulate them. I never got to play any of them back in the day when Best Buy, Sears, etc. had kiosks.
I will say though that emulated controls might make it a better experience than if you played it on CDi though; that was one of the worst controllers you could ask for.

The only (commercial) CD-i emulator currently supports mouse input only, so controls are actually worse than on a real device (there were timed WIP "trials" with keyboard input, but those limited play to like 5 minutes and are deactivated by timed deathswitch now).

The CDi had a separate gamepad dedicated exclusively for games. Not sure if it's the one Joseph is referring to or the default TV remote thing, which was still pretty awkward to use though. Yes, I had the privilege to actually use a real CDi, but never got to play any of its games.

I haven't personally played the CD-i Zelda games, but I have watched the Angry Video Game Nerd's extensive reviews of them. And regardless of what you may think of AVGN, it's hard to deny that he makes some pretty good points regarding poor game design decisions in all three CD-i Zelda games. Particularly the poor item management and lack of indication as to what is and isn't a platform.

Perhaps, but he made some really bad errors. The "hitting rupees to collect them" thing was in the second game, as was hitting people to speak with them. The side-scrolling CDi Zelda games were based on the second NES Zelda, because LttP wasn't out yet. I don't actually like the second NES Zelda, and I prefer the CDi titles over it. I've played the Zelda CDI games and they are pretty good. You're automatically my favourite poster now. I've been saying it for years. And to think they called me mad - NOW WHO IS THE MAD ONE?!!

I can appreciate and understand the charm of the CDI titles, but I'm not going to defend them. Long load times, clunky controls, bad hit detection coupled with annoying enemy placement. They're kusoge in every sense of the term. I'm fine with that, but I won't confuse great backgrounds, good music, and generally good graphics and gameplay concepts for a good game.
As far as the animation goes, I enjoy it for its bizarre pacing, dialogue, and "camera" movement; every time there's an extreme closeup out of nowhere I crack up.
The games have a lot of heart, but that's about it as far as I'm concerned.
