I might have to drop out of this one. I feel really bad, but stuff is coming up and I can't juggle everything at once. I got to the first level of World 4. I'm not sure how much longer the game goes, but it's probably pretty far. Password is HCKD. This is the level I was on.

I've made it to what I believe is the last part of area three, and the game has gotten really brutal. The stages are much larger than anything in the forest or mines, and the game has a tendency to throw you into situations where you just have to tank any damage you receive. Probably my least favorite thing about this area are the screens where you have to fight two orcs at once. Since both of them have auto shotguns, which they love to fire out of synch with each other, it's almost impossible not to get hit by one or both of them during the battle. Worse still, they are often placed atop platforms or catwalks where you're likely to get knocked into a pit. Thankfully the game has been pretty liberal with potions so far, but that still doesn't make it any less frustrating. At least the music in this section is pretty rad!

Since the conversation has slowed a bit, I'm curious to see which games in this genre are your favorites. And by genre I mean Mechner-esque Puzzle Platformers, as xerxes calls them. There's a lot more of them out there than I realized, and even a few attempts to bring them into 3D.

This one's pretty good. I also like SOS. One thing I noticed though. For as 90s grimdark as this game is, there's a distinct lack of women. Shouldn't there be some wasp-waisted bazooka chick with an eyepatch somewhere? Y'know, like... But with patch-eyes.

Having just beaten the game, here are some tips for dealing with Sarlac: - Never put your gun away. Most of Sarlac's attacks can be dodged by moving left or right, or hugging the wall.
- You're going to get hit during this fight. There's simply no way to avoid damage, so if you must get hit, get hit by Sarlac's fists.
- It's best to stand near where you spawn, underneath the leftmost dog statue. If you move towards the center to avoid Sarlac's attacks, his statues will drop firebombs on you that can't be dodged.
- When Sarlac's hands crackle with electricity, move either direction immediately to avoid the lightning traps on the floor.
This fight is mostly a war of attrition, so once you get the pattern down, it's all about timing and waiting for an opening to attack.

Obviously I sort of have a raging fan-boner for Another World since I take every opportunity to proclaim it's greatness every time the topic comes up. It deals with difficulty in a clever way - it doesn't really get harder the situations you navigate just change with the downside being it's very short.
As pointed out in the chat, the recent Prince of Persia games certainly seem to fit the bill with my personal favorite being Warrior Within...yes THAT game, if you can stomach the characters it probably has the best platforming and combat of the trilogy.

I'm at Sarlaac's keep now.
Since you're probably facing multiple blue orcs by now, it's time to make a habit of avoiding their shots until you can roll behind them to get off two free shots when they pop out.
All the backtracking in the desert stages wasn't too bad if it weren't for the gauntlet of timed gate switch runs that required multiple perfect running jumps, which is the one gimmick that I always hated about these PoP-style games. But hey now I have a full-auto shotgun with exploding shells.
Speaking of which, either Androthi tech can somehow make a recoil-less shotgun or Kyle's power is actually channeling the spirit of 80's action hero movies by being able to fire the damn thing behind him with one outstretched arm.
Is there a webcomic or two out there that make fun of how these games always seem to take place in a world full of suspended walkways that you're supposed to routinely hoist yourself up to with just your arms or reach by employing Olympic-level horizontal jumps? I know Flashback tried to make the urban areas slightly less batty but you can only go so far before the game mechanics force you to forgo any kind of sensible structural engineering...

That would require me to search through a bunch of webcomics... In a similar request, can anyone confirm my suspicions that this game is based in part on Battlefield Earth? In a way that doesn't require me read/watch Battlefield Earth?

I was gonna say, unless Kyle's rough trade in practice (and not just looks) being king of the sausage fest isn't going to be much fun. I'm wondering if they left out female Androthi because of concerns of violence against women, or if they were just lazy. I'm probably not going to be able to beat the game by podcast, but it's ok, I beat the game years ago when it first came out. I remember liking it a lot more back then; now it's just kind of like "oh hai, Flashback clone."

I've tried to play this game a couple times this month, but I always get bored after a couple levels. Blackthorne is basically just Flashback But Worse and it's not holding my attention.

Having finished the game last week, here are more tips for the last boss: -Like Snarboo said, stay away from the center. Unless you're rolling straight from one side to the other, the fire bombs cannot be avoided. -Sarlac's yellow shot is the only attack you can avoid by dodging into the background, EXCEPT if you're near the wall. Optionally, you can dodge it by rolling straight into Sarlac. Better to eat the fist than the shot. -You can dodge the electricity by crouching from a standing position faster than you can dodge the shot by getting up from a crouch, so try to be standing most of the time. Overall, I enjoyed the game. The mechanics were a bit limited and the story minimal to nonexistent, but the stages were short enough to as not overstay their welcome.

Eh, I'll admit, I never hated playing Blackthorne. My problem was that it felt like what you were supposed to do wasn't really clear a good portion of the time, but I guess that comes as standard with this kind of platformer, really. That, and the combat really kind of breaks down by the second set of levels.

...I literally just noticed Blackthorne on the cover looks absolutely nothing like he does in the game. I don't know how it took me this long to realize.
