Do you like Sonic? Do you like Ristar? Do you like Mega Man X? Do you like Gunstar Heroes? Do you like Rocket Knight Adventures? You know what, do you like any 2D action platformers in general? Good enough. You want Freedom Planet. Like, I'd say, at times that it outclasses Sonic 3. That is not something I'd say lightly. I know, it looks a lot like a Sonic game. And to be fair, they do take a lot of inspiration from those games. On the other hand, though, they pull a lot of ideas from a lot of other classic action games on the Genesis and put it together into something that's pretty unique on its own. Think of it like this: What Shovel Knight was to the NES, this is to the Genesis. (Although I'd say it's more like a Saturn game, but still.) You have characters that play pretty differently from each other, to the point where they each get a unique level to play through, a lot of secrets and alternate paths, and my favorite part, some really good boss fights. It also has what I'd basically call the hypest final level AND boss I've played through in a very, very long time. It gets pretty rough, at some points, especially some of the later bosses. You do, however, get unlimited lives. Also, there's a demo here. You get a pretty good amount of gameplay, but the best boss fights are in the full version. It's currently $15 on Steam, but I'd say it's totally worth it if you like any of the aforementioned games. Also, fun.

Completely misleading thread title. I thought this was going to be about a Treasure-developed Sonic game and it's just some (admittedly decent looking) indie game. Nevermind that "A + B = C" thread titles are not even that clever.

Heh, does look kinda cool. I kinda wish they had gone with a more original artstyle (Sonic's never looks right to me outside of Sonic), but it's kind of interesting seeing how different the gameplay itself it than its chief inspiration. I will say, though, that I think the backgrounds end up looking a bit better than the character sprites.

And you can lose the snarking, too, that'd be nice.

This does make it immune to the "Sonic cycle." =P

Just for head-explode-ness.

This does make it immune to the "Sonic cycle." =P That was the first thing I thought of, too.

Don't take it personally, just giving sound advice. Just use the game's title as the thread title ("Freedom Planet") and maybe a simple description if you feel it's necessary ("Freedom Planet - A Sonic inspired 2D game"). The less ambiguity, the better. The equation doesn't make much sense even in context.

This does make it immune to the "Sonic cycle." =P It's so weird how much that thing caught on, because there are only like 2 games to which this actually applies, I think -- Sonic 06 and possibly Unleashed, and even Unleashed seems to be mostly well-regarded at the ground level (at least on the order of SA2, I mean). Heroes didn't any of that laser fighting shit and actually had lots of throwbacks to the classics, while Shadow doesn't really count in the first place anyway, I'd say.

I'm pretty sure the Sonic Cycle quit being relevant back in 2010, mostly because Sonic Colors actually made it go backwards. We started at the end of the cycle, where nobody thought it would be any good. Then came the screenshots and video, which made people start getting hopeful, and then when the game came out, it actually turned out to be better than anybody was expecting.
Then we get Sonic Generations, which ended up being even better, and Sonic & Sega Transformed is pretty much the best kart racer out there since Crash Team Racing, in my opinion, so...

Sonic Colors was the El NiƱo of the Sonic Cycle and it will return to its normal flow after a few seasons
