Here is footage of one of the existing Jaguar Voice Modem in action with Ultra Vortek by Beyond Games, the only official title on the Atari Jaguar library that features support with it for online play.

I wish Capcom could have made the recent Street Fighters and Marvel VS Capcom games look this brilliant.

Finished Dragon Quest XI. Took a full 90 hours (with the post game), and I'm myself surprised I fully enjoyed it till the end. Normally an RPG gets really long in the tooth after stretching itself past the 50 hours. And boy oh boy, if you already thought there is a lot of fanservice for series veterans in the first two acts, and there certainly is (even with the 3DS versions memories that make you literally replay scenarios of the previous ten games gone from the PS4 one), the post game storyline just positively detonates with it. What a cool way to celebrate 30 years of DQ. Did even get the platinum, which is something I usually don't care about, but was only short two or three trophies, so I went for it. They are generally not particularly tough to get, there is no crazy "catalogue all monsters" or "play under these draconian settings" or somesuch. It also reminded me of the fact that I went through the post game of both XI and IX (at least the story parts) but never did it with VIII despite quite liking that game too. Maybe it has to do with the visible monsters making it less exhausting to add even more time to an already long game than being constantly interrupted by random encounters.
And since I'm miraculously still in the mood for more JRPGs, I booted up Tales of Vesperia. Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia are generally the games I hear the most positive stuff about when it comes to the franchise, and Vesperia especially seems to be well regarded even by those that aren't to keen on the others. And only judging from the start, I quite like it so far. The cast is very likeable and plays off one another great, the battles are over quick, it seems to move at a decent pace, and it also shows how well stylized graphics can age.

Congrats! Vesperia is great, but you might want to have a FAQ ready for the sidequests, since quite many of them are missable.

So it seems that the ESA left even more data easy to find...

So cool!!!
It's so sad. I already have all of those titles loaded onto my NES Mini Classic, but I'm stilling planning to fork out some hard-earned cash for this Genesis Mini.

Guess who's back? Gamer Griff's back! (tell a friend)
Yes, I haven't been posting much lately but I'm still here, I finished Yakuza 0 and I finally started up Bloodstained and oh wow, it's fucking awesome, I felt an intense wave of nostalgia wash over me when I started up the game, I missed these "IGAvanias" so much and it's wonderful to finally have him back.
The only disappointment though is the soundtrack, it's not nearly as good as I was hoping/expecting, it's nowhere near on the level of Symphony, Aria and Lament (my 3 favs), maybe my girl Yamane was out of the 'vania game too long and her skills atrophied, because I'm frankly stunned by how underwhelming the soundtrack is, it's not terrible, but it just kinda blends into the background, I haven't heard any tunes yet that really stick out, it's a shame because they absolutely nailed everything else about the game.
And I like how it's kinda like a blend of many of the past games, it's got the aesthetics of Symphony, the soul mechanic of Aria/Dawn and a protagonist reminiscent of Order of Ecclesia, IGA has got one hell of a tasty stew going, it's just a shame Yamane wasn't quite able to bring her A game as well.

Oh yeah, as a little side project, I started Dragon Quest X up. Just to be able to say I played every main game. We'll see how far it'll work. It's interesting how much from this game seems to have seeped into DQXI. Like the battles taking place right where you initiate them and the other enemies still visibly roaming the area around you. The shiny pickup materials in the overworld. Or being able to move around during battle until your turn comes up and you pick your action from the traditional menu - just that it is less awkward in X due to it of course not being turn based and thus moving actually does something. Finished the offline prologue and the initial Ogre village online part. Seems to go by pretty quickly, but like most MMORPGs that are around for years and have made a decent chunk of their content free to start, I guess they really quickened the pace of the Version 1 stuff so that you get to the paywall quicker ;P Congrats! Vesperia is great, but you might want to have a FAQ ready for the sidequests, since quite many of them are missable. Thanks. And I will look into it.

Realms of the Haunting - I've been meaning to play this for a very long time (basically since release). I started it up a little while ago, but I only managed to get about half to two thirds of the way through before it wore me down. I remember it being highly regarded in the late 90s to today, but I feel like it's very overrated. Mainly it's just very boring. I remember it being called one of the only FMV games to be good which I don't think is true in both the fact that there are plenty of fine FMV games and also that this game isn't really that good. It's supposed to be a horror/occult FPS/adventure and it does start out well enough with a creepy old house, a big mausoleum underneath and varies sinister happenings. Ultimately though it feels very dragged out with a plot that gets really big but also moves very slowly. Many of the areas feel very padded out. Combat is really wonky with enemies that can't walk through doorways and occasionally can't traverse steps either. The adventure elements are also very light to nonexistent. The acting in the cutscenes is competent, and the story is hypothetically interesting though. It's just too long from excessive padding.

I felt the same way when I started playing. Voyage of Promise and Luxurious Overture really grew on me. There's a relaxed elegance that I really like. Gears of Fortune is decent track too, though it seems to have been composed by Ryusuke Fujioka instead of Yamane. The soundtrack also Keisuke Ito and Atsuhiro Ishizuna (for mostly 8-bit synthesized music) contributing to the soundtrack.
