I have noticed that despite this site being about cult video games it does not really pay much attention to certain genres. Especially those that still do not generaly get released outside of Japan. I am not asking for or proposing a change at this site. That would be too much to ask for. I am just asking if anybody here plays these genres or maybe like certain games of these genres.
Some examples of genres that generaly do not get released outside of Japan that I am talking about would be like visual novels, text games, arcade style vehicular simulators, Japanese gambling games, Japanese board games, dating sims, life sims, or even certain genres of sports games like oozumo and even dodgeball is generly not released outside of Japan. Does anybody play any of these genres? If so, are there any games that people who do not play these genres could enjoy? And is it possible to see some kind of entries about these genres here? That seems like the point of this site: to introduce people to neglected games they might not have been familiar with. I play oozumo games, dodgeball games and arcade style vehicular simulators so if anybody has questions about those genres I could possibly answer them or make recommendations.
And what about genres that do make it outside of Japan that generaly do not get talked about at this site or message board? Genres like simulation games, strategy games, pinball games, puzzle games, classic arcade style games, music and/or rhythm games, audio games, sports games, survival horror games, zapper games, shooting gallery games (games like Cabal) or whatever else? I started a topic about sports games recently and a topic about classic arcade style games recently, but generaly these are ignored here and these other genres are almost completely, if not completely, ignored here. Does anybody here play these genres? I play pinball games, puzzle games, classic arcade style games, select sports games, occasional survival horror games and shooting gallery games. I could also answer questions about these or make recommendations.
What about genres that have gotten very little support? Like shooting gallery games or certain genres of sports games.
I am starting this topic because it would always be nice to see as much discussed here as possible. At this message board or in this site's gaming entries. Also I am totally willing to give genres that I am not familiar with or have negleted a chance. Sometimes that is a good way to find good games.

Visual novels and text games tend to suck, Alot. Simulation games usually aren't good unless coupled with
(Lower or higher case) SIM[insert game here] or "Sid Meirs (I can't spell the name) [Insert Game Here] I can't comment on strategy games having only played three or four series of games I liked. There isn't much to survival horror games and unless it's time grises shooting gallery games are another one that are n't fun unless [Insert here]
Plus, most of the people that contribute articles don't do it for an entire genre but for a series

There isn't much to survival horror games and unless it's time grises shooting gallery games are another one that are n't fun unless [Insert here] Sorry Mazinsaga but that level of near ignorance and generalisation on a site about hardcore gaming is pretty weak. There's more Sim games then just SIM..infact their's hundreds (Regretably I can't give a name list) but there's ancient things like School Daze and things like the more recent (and complete genius) Creatures series which baffles with its complexity. Basically saying that usually only Sim games with SIM or Sid Meiyer on them are the only good ones is like suggesting that usually the only decent RPGs have Square directly involved. There isn't much to survival horror games and unless it's time grises shooting gallery games are another one that are n't fun unless [Insert here] Alone.....in the Dark? It's a complete classic and it's not Japanese (I believe it inspired Resident Evil). You've also got things like Nightmare Creatures and Nocturne. Granted I don't like shooting galleries much but it's a genre and some people happen to like them. Flight simulators bore me but I know people who love them. My tone here may seem pretty aggressive but I assure you that it's only because I feel compelled to drive the notation that (because I agree with ZZZ) we can't be ignorant of certain genres because they're not as strong in Japan. I know The Neverhood was covered here but there's needs to be more. On the other hand though ZZZ Survival horror games are resonably popular in Japan I thought what with Biohazard/Resident Evil doing I assume resonably well.

Assuming i can get my fiance' to loan me the games (and figure out a way to do the image capture stuff), I could try doing an article on the very creepy Fatal Frame series. Also on that note, someone (can't remember who) promised to do a Sweet Home NES article (being a survival horror RPG for the NES), and as for various Sim games.... No comment since this is outside my field of interest (though I still like Sim City 2000, Sim Tower, and Sim Ant), though I also recall Kurt having some rather amusing words regarding Animal Crossing in cranky gamers. Puzzle games, like Tetris could be rather hard to do given how easy they are to port and the almost infinite variety. As for Pinball, Dragon's Revenge, Pinball Quest, Virtual Pinball and Cru Ball seem to stick out in my mind as worthy games (Also, the Stellar 7 article can be amended for Sierra's Take a Break Pinball, which features 2 boards devoted to Gir Draxon, along side Roger Wilco from Space Quest and Willy Beamish).

Well, I think the great thing about this site is if there is a series or game that is not getting the respect it deserves, Kurt is more than happy to accept an article if it is well-written and researched thoroughly.
I'd like to break your post down to two points, if you don't mind:
1) There are many genres such as love sims, visual novels, vehicle sims, etc that are not covered here.
-I think this is because these are really niches of niches. Only a very small percentage of gamers will be interested in Japanese games, and only a very small percentage of that group will be interested in, for example, Densha de Go! That is not to say that these games aren't worth talking about... maybe these games are really great, but very few people have been exposed to them. I've certainly been convinced to try a game that didn't initially appeal to me thanks to a nicely written article or review. So it might just take a nice article or at least a thread about a certain game to get people interested!
2) Certain non-Japanese genres are not discussed here -I think this is because the goal of this site seems to be to champion under-represented series and games. The kinds of games that aren't known to a great many people. Many of the genres you listed are extremely popular and get discussed quite a bit on the mainstream sites and in popular magazines.

That's a great article on I-Mockery had me rofling throughout. Kyouki I disagree a little with the popular genre concept, sure RTS's are popular but how much talk is done about Hundred Swords, Dark Reign, 7th Legion or Metal Fatigue. Not nearly enough I'd say. Primarily because these games have fallen into obscurity either through age or other means. However I would also say that www.the-underdogs.info does a good job with a lot of western games (formely http://www.the-underdogs.org).

That's a good point, there are a lot of games in those genres that are overlooked... you're right.

...Surely you're not refering to that horrible Sprung game?
If you want a dating sim, go play Thousand Arms. Its a decent RPG that makes you date different girls so you can forge better weapons.
Also, I don't think HG is neglecting any genres, the problem is that most of the people here may not have enough knowledge of said games to write an article. Personally, I'd love to see an article on a dating sim by Atlus called Bloody Bride. You're a vampire and you need blood-from a willing woman thats in love with you.

Didn't Bloody Bride get a transilation hack by the same guy that did the Tobal 2 transilation?

A point that I was making has been interpreted wrong. I guess I could have worded it better. I was not claiming HG101 was neglecting games made outside of Japan. I do not believe it is. Let me simplify my comments to four points:
Certain genres are neglected outside of Japan. These may or may not be popular in Japan, but they are regulated almost exclusively to Japan. See genres metioned in second paragraph of first post.
Certain genres are released outside of Japan and may or may not be popular outside of Japan, but are being neglected at HG101. See genres mentioned in third paragraph of first post.
Certain genres are given very little support. Or in other words, there are very few games of those genres. As a result they are generally neglected by most regardless of region and at HG101. See fourth paragraph of first post.
This site is a good place to dicuss these genres. At this message board or in this site's gaming entries. This topic is a good topic to discuss these genres among those that play them or those that are interested in learning about them, but have no clue where to start. People who play them could give others information about them or make recommendations. This is a good way to find out about good games that people may not have been aware of or given a chance. See fifth paragraph of first post and first post in general.
Also, by shooting gallery games I mean games like Cabal, NAM-1975, Pirates or whatever else. It seems that maybe people believed I was talking about games like Duck Hunt or Baker Bill's Trick Shooting? I refered to those as zapper games.
Like I said I play a few of these genres and would always be interesting to learn about a genre that I am not familiar with. Anybody else play any genres like what I was talking about? Not just genres that I mentioned specificaly, but that my post was refering to generaly? Or is anybody else interested in learning about these genres or getting into them but need a place to start or whatever? I will give any information possible if I play that genre.

Yeah, I think it did. I was under the impression that you had to burn the game in order to apply the patch.

Ooh, Cabal. I love that game. Anyway, I tend to gravitate towards the extremely obscure. I'd say it's a combination of me being jaded about mainstream games, my ego making me want to play games that nobody else has played or heard of, and my undying passion for games that makes me search out long forgotten masterpieces. I dabble in a lot of different types of Japanese sims, and I especially like a good dating sim. The pornographic ones are worth a laugh, and the straight and narrow ones are usually a nice way to relax since they aren't usually especially taxing on the mind or fingers. However, when you find a truly brilliant dating sim, one that doesn't simply have repetitive, you-can't-lose game design, they're a joy to play. My favorite is just about the king of obscure with the formula of "dating sim + board game + N64", and if you want to see exceptionally obscure games getting a lot of coverage, I definitely did just that here: www.inverteddungeon.com/triacesuperfan/getterlovereview.htmlI also like "bring-up sims" or "raising sims" or whatever you want to call them since there's so little attention on the genre that nobody has taken the effort to formulate a standardized title for them. The Wonder Project J series is among my absolute favorites games of any genre, and even if someone doesn't like the genre at all, they have no heart if they can't fall in love with the games, in my opinion. I believe Kurt said awhile back that he was going to do a WPJ article, so I'm definitely looking forward to that. But until then, at least I gave the second game a ton of coverage on my site and GameFAQs.
