The podcast is now available! Grab it here! So how about that pigskin? How about that sport of pigskin? GC9X discusses one of the very few annual American Football series that manages to endure even today: Madden NFL '95 (Genesis, SNES)Madden NFL '95 (for the Sega Genesis only) was the first Madden game to have both the NFL team logo and NFLPA licenses. This version of Madden NFL was also the first Madden to showcase no passing windows. Previously included "Past Championship Teams" and "All-Franchise" teams were not included. Player stats were tracked individually both in-game, and throughout a season. The cover has John Madden on it, but it also features two actual NFL players, Dallas Cowboys left tackle Erik Williams and San Francisco defensive lineman Karl Wilson who has his number edited to show the fictional number 70 which was not used on the 49ers roster. It is the first to be released to a handheld, being released for the first time to both the Game Boy and Game Gear. Also in the game, it features the theme song from the NFL on Fox. Wikipedia's Madden NFL '95 Article Disclaimer: We don't want anybody to be groaning about Madden. While the series has garnered a negative reputation among less mainstream gaming circles, please do your best to keep an open mind. GC9X is about exploring games of all kinds and giving everything its fair share, and we encourage gamers to explore outside of their comfort zones and try something they never would have thought of trying before. With that said, game on.PRO TIPPZ:Voting will last until Sunday, May 5th, at 10:30 PM EST! *NOTE*: When voting, please choose a game that you want to play - and will play - but have not beaten entirely or beaten recently, say, within the last 5 - 10 years. You may not vote for a game that you have played or spoiled within the last year! It's also best to vote for a game that you have not played before. All votes are final, so no going back if you change your mind. Make your vote as clear as possible. If you don't wish to vote, please say so in your post. If you're going to vote, we'd like to have you along for the ride! Previous GC9X Threads:

Let's do this shit.
I am up for some MOTHER. FUCKING. JOHN. MADDEN. NINTEEN NINETY-FIVE. Seriously, this is the motherfucking glory days of the franchise right here (because after 95 they started going for the later consoles and trying to do all 3D STUFF and LOTS OF FANCY BUTTON PROCEDURES). This is just you and the football and 100 yards of hard-fought glory.

Madden '95. I don't care for football and I don't play sports games, but deliberately playing something outside my comfort zone seems strangely appealing.

Trespasser is such a legendary trainwreck of a game that I have no choice but to vote for it.

Well, since it's the only here I have, I guess I vote Car Battler Joe.

Car Battler Joe sounds like it could be fun, I'll vote for that.

Dammit, I thought we were done with gag games? Well, I'm out for another month. Madden is the only one I own, but Car Battler Joe is the only one I would even consider playing. I have absolutely no clue how to play football games because I barely know anything about football.

Can't decide. It'd be cool to have GC9X do an old sports game, but voting for another USA-centric selection given last month's game would make me feel like I'm being exclusionary.

I'm honestly quite torn, because while Car Battler Joe sounded kinda cool when I read about it in an old issue of Nintendo Power, I too would like to see how GC9X handles a sports game (I mean, hell, I voted for Fats last month). Trespasser, as cool an idea as it is, has already been covered pretty well across the 'net, with ResearchIndicates' Let's Play video series being pretty definitive.
So, long post cut short, my vote goes to Madden '95. Even though I don't know a damn thing about football, except that you can apparently yell "HUT!" a lot before you actually throw the ball and that's probably a valid strategy.

Since I just downloaded Trespasser (and the requisite mods), I'm voting for that. Let's see how this rolls.

Eh, what the hell. Lets go with Madden. I've never played a football game before (unless you count Pigskin AD as one) and I know very little about it, so at least it will be a new experience.

Jurassic Park: Trespasser, si vous plait. It's apparently quite playable (and even fun) with the proper patches, which can be found right here.I admit, my anti-sports stereotypical nerdness is chiming in here, and CBJ seems interesting but not the sort of game I'm interested in playing. Plus, I'm all for discussing an actual property meant to be about dinosaurs, unlike Home Improvement's pseudo-prehistoric first area.

Madden '95. I don't care for football and I don't play sports games, but deliberately playing something outside my comfort zone seems strangely appealing. This is exactly the reason I must vote for Madden 95. BTW, before I put this in the randomizer list (which I did several months ago if you're curious) I looked up which of the "classic" Madden games was considered to be the best. This was it. So this wasn't another gag attempt at playing a game widely held to be awful. It's an attempt to play a great artifact from a genre this community normally ignores. I have absolutely no clue how to play football games because I barely know anything about football. So if you learn it by playing a video game, football is kinda ... just another video game, right? Maybe you'd like it in vidja form. It's easy to forget that professional(ized) sports are still games. The cool thing about sports games, at least to me, is how they give awkward schlubs like me a chance to explore very sophisticated rule-sets without said awkward schlubbery getting in the way.

Like I suggested above, xerxes is right that M95 is probably the best of the 90s Madden games, especially the Genny version. The SNES has a few kinda-cool mode 7 bits but they intrude on the game and aren't especially interesting.
