Jesus it makes me feel old, and that doesn't make sense.

I’d say that if you like Banjo-Kazooie, at least try giving DK64 a shot. I can agree to all the criticisms about DK64 (except that I like the style and don’t find it too clashing with earlier titles), but I still like it well enough.

While I actually like DK64, I made the mistake to play it after I played Banjo Tooie. Going back to self-contained levels after roaming around through Tooie's interconnected worlds, was a bit of a disappointment for me.

Claims of exaggeration be damned, DK64 killed all the love I had for 3D Platformers. I had played games like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie to death. I remember I had 100%'d B-K at least 3 times around the release of DK64. I just remember it being a soul-crushingly boring game that forced you to play through each level multiple times. It was just a bunch of boring minigames connected by tunnels and easy to beat enemies. No spark, no soul. I wasn't able to give another one of these types of games a chance until Super Mario Galaxy 2(which I'm glad I did, because holy shit that game is awesome). I would avoid DK64.

The article provided a fun stroll down the memory lane, but for somebody who isn't familiar with the games, I doubt there's much to gather here. There's no description of the secondary heroes from the sequels (which DO play a good deal differently) and the general gameplay-approach (it's not as precise as Mega Man, but neither does it feel as loose as Earthworm Jim). Also there's an error with the text formatting below the "Cranky's Video Game Heroes" pic on page 2. Plus, you could've given the reason David Wise composed new music for DKC3 on the GBA - it wasn't to spite Evelin Fischer at all: (via www.davidwise.co.uk/a-history/square-enix-muisc)Speaking of music - since Donkey Kong Land was the first game of the series I actually owned (I _loved_ the first game as a kid but had no SNES back then - about a year afterwards, I had the sequel and a SNES; looking back it's weird how little time was actually in between those two instances), I feel the music could've been detailled a bit more (or at all) - it features a ton of all new tracks, which in my opinion, feature some of the best technical usage of the GB's sound chip, and also feel surprisingly dark and moody for a Gameboy game (blarring exceptions such as the city theme nonwithstanding). There's a ton of arpeggiated textures, which I guess was partially used to make up for the lack of voice channels, but either way, it sounds great! ETA: In the DKL2 portion of the article, there's a typo: Second "it's" should be "its". (And I felt that compared to DKL1 it was a lot less overdetailed, so you could actually gather what was going on on the screen most of the time) Just so you don't get me wrong, though - it IS a good article. I just have a very soft spot for the whole series, so I'm nitpicking (could be worse, it could've been about Mega Man!).

I gotta say, though - watching speedrunners play it is HILARIOUS. Two of their best tactics in that game involve glitching DK's kick so it propels you into the air, and throwing oranges until the game lags so you can travel through walls (because apparently, lag in that game causes your character to move faster.)

Thanks again for the feedback. I've added a few small tweaks here and there, including the competition cart, the removed Virtual Console releases, a bit about the control differences between the different characters, the music in DKL (and DKC3 GBA).
I'm getting mixed reactions to this article. Beyond small things like this, are people really pissed at DK64 getting torn to pieces? It's not like it's a particularly uncommon opinion.

not pissed, but I just find it's kinda funny how people react to the game today as if it killed their favourite pet^^

I had Donkey Kong 64. In fact, I got the N64 that CAME with Donkey Kong 64 for Christmas one year. And trust me, it's entirely deserved. Thankfully, Banjo Tooie was a lot better.

Since I never owned a N64, I can't comment on DK64, but I'm kinda surprised you dig DKC3 as much as you do. I applaud a lot of the things it did, but I just never felt that the levels were all that inspired, especially later on when they relied heavily on gimmicks and featured little platforming at all. I guess that and the increasing collectathon-elements threw me off a bit. Still finished it, but not at 103%. I'd say it's a good game, but while DKC has very cool atmosphere (it is one of the few games that FEELS dated in the way that you can tell it's obviously using tricks such as pallete-swapped bosses and all that, yet works as far as mechanics go... that and I loved the shit out of it as a kid, but had to settle for DKL) and DKC2 has great level designs, it's just good, with the over world movement as its most unique feature.
A friend of mine is a huge fan of that game, though, but he also digs DK64 and collectathons.

Oh, I didn't write it, the guy posting in this thread as Revolver Ocelot did. The only part I really wrote was the 3DS section of Donkey Kong Country Returns, since this article inspired me to give it a shot.

I only wrote the Donkey Kong Land parts of the article. Loved the GB games, even they were a little rough around the edges.
I guess my position of DK64 is that it's average. Too much bonus barrels and frustrating mini games for me. It had its moments, though. The jack-in-the-box boss was fun. I liked the Castle and Fungi Forest levels. The timed segment near the end was cool too. The collect-a-thon stuff didn't bug me too much. I played a lot of RPGs around when I played DK64 and some of them can get a little heavy on collecting junk to unlock stuff, so I was used to it and thought that collecting tons of stuff was normal.

I kept thinking it felt too much like they were desperately trying to make the hardware produce music that was pretty much entirely unsuited to the hardware. Sometimes it worked okay (I like the Mountain level in particular), but things like the iconic Jungle theme just came out weird. Warioland 2 is probably the best Game Boy music I can think of; it sounds neat and crisp in comparison. ...Also, is "anthromorph" a real word? Google doesn't seem to think so. ("Anthropomorph" doesn't work either.) I fixed some references to "silicon rendering", as Silicon Graphics rendering is considerably more accurate.

Misinformation on Donkey Kong Land III.
The Game Boy Color was NOT out in 1997. It was released a year later, late 1998. The GBC version was not released in Japan until 2000 (and I think the monochrome version was not released in Japan, though I think I have an old Game Informer from 1998 that lists it as Donkey Kong Land 2, when they reported from a game expo in Japan. Shoshinkai, maybe?)

I wanted to ask. Has anyone in the gaming community. Who search for Beta Stuff. Ever discover what the Glitch that required the expansion pack was and if it was able to be fixed?
